Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2013 RAM 1500. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. CHECK FOR ACTIVE DTC
    NOTE:

If there are any other Engine Hood Switch DTCs present in the PCM or BCM, diagnose those DTCs before proceeding with this test procedure.

    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, view PCM DTCs.

      Is the DTC active?

      Yes

      • Go To  2

      No

  2. HOOD SECURED PROPERLY
    1. Visually inspect that the Hood is secured properly. Also inspect the Hood Ajar Switch and Latch assembly for proper installation.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes

      • Perform the appropriate repair.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

      No

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE ENGINE HOOD SWITCH 2 VOLTAGE
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Engine Hood Switch 2 harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Measure the voltage of the (K806) Engine Hood Switch 2 Signal circuit at the Engine Hood Switch 2 harness connector.

Is the voltage reading above 4.9 volts?

      Yes

      • Go To  6

      No

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE (K806) ENGINE HOOD SWITCH 2 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance between ground and the (K806) Engine Hood Switch 2 Signal circuit at the Engine Hood Switch 2 harness connector.

Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes

      • Go To  5

      No

      • Repair the (K806) Engine Hood Switch 2 Signal circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  5. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE
    1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the Engine Hood Switch 2 and the Powertrain Control Module.
    2. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
    3. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
    4. Perform any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes

      No

      • Replace the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  6. CHECK THE ENGINE HOOD SWITCH 2
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Remove the Engine Hood Switch 2.
    3. Depress and release the switch while measuring the resistance across the terminals of the Engine Hood Switch 2.
      NOTE:

The switch should have continuity when not depressed and be open when it is depressed.

Did the resistance read as described above?

      Yes

      • Go To  7

      No

      • Replace Engine Hood Switch 2.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  7. CHECK THE HOOD AJAR SWITCH VOLTAGE
    1. Disconnect the Hood Ajar Switch (Hood Latch) harness connector.
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. Measure the resistance between ground and the (G70) Hood Ajar Switch Sense circuit at the Hood Ajar Switch harness connector.

Is the voltage above 4.9 volts?

      Yes

      • Replace the Hood Ajar Switch (Hood Latch).
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

      No

      • Go To  8
  8. CHECK THE (G70) HOOD AJAR SWITCH SENSE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the BCM harness connector A.
    3. Measure the resistance between ground and the (G70) Hood Ajar Switch Sense circuit at the Hood Ajar Switch harness connector.

Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes

      • Go To  9

      No

      • Repair the (G70) Hood Ajar Switch Sense circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  9. BODY CONTROL MODULE
