Cooling System Filling - 3.6L

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2013 RAM 1500. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:

If vehicle has been run recently, wait 15 minutes before removing pressure cap. Place a shop towel over the cap, and without pushing down, rotate it counterclockwise to the first stop. Allow fluids to escape through the overflow tube. When the system stops pushing coolant and steam into the coolant recovery container and pressure drops, push down on the cap and remove it completely. Squeezing the radiator inlet hose with a shop towel (to check pressure) before and after turning to the first stop is recommended.

  1. Install coolant fill funnel (1) (special tool #8195A, Funnel).
  2. Remove the upper heater core hose at the heater core.
  3. Fill the radiator to the recommended level.
  4. Install the heater core hose when coolant is present.
  5. Fill the coolant over flow bottle to the recommended level.
  6. Remove the funnel from the radiator.
  7. Install the radiator cap.

    NOTE:

The blower motor speed and the HVAC control positioning will determine the flow of coolant through cooling system.

  8. Start the engine and place the HVAC control (3) to full hot  .
  9. Place the blower switch (2) to low  .
  10. Allow the engine to warm up at idle for roughly 10 minutes.
  11. Top the coolant off if required.
  12. Increase the engine speed to 4, 000 RPM until the thermostat opens at 105° C (220° F) and verify the fan is operating.
  13. Switch the HVAC control to full cold  with the blower switch on high  for 15 minutes to allow the coolant to be mainly directed to pass through the three way valve into the transmission heater.
  14. Switch the HVAC to full hot  with the blower switch on high  for 10 minutes to allow the coolant to flow mainly through the heater core.
  15. Switch the blower from high  to low  , which will reposition the three way valve to flow a small amount of coolant to the transmission heater.
  16. Shut the engine off.
    NOTE:

The use of a external fan can be used to help aid in the cooling of the engine.

  17. Allow the engine to cool down enough for the thermostat to close.
  18. Top the coolant over flow bottle off if required.
  19. Restart the engine and increase the engine speed up to 4, 000 RPM until the thermostat opens.
  20. Allow the engine to idle after the thermostat opens.
  21. Verify the cooling fan is operational.
  22. Switch the HVAC controls to full cold  with the blower switch on high  .
  23. Check the level of the coolant.
  24. Switch the HVAC controls to full hot  .
  25. Top the coolant overflow bottle off if required.
  26. Take the vehicle for a test drive.
  27. Top the coolant overflow bottle off if required.
