Theory Of Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2012 RAM Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) and Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) are hall effect type sensors. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) provides the sensors with a 5-Volt supply and a ground on the sensor return circuit. As the notch on the crank pulley or the windows on the camshaft gear travel by the position sensor, a signal is generated on the position sensor signal circuit. The PCM interprets this signal and converts it to an engine speed. If the fault is active the engine will run derated and a hard start/rough idle is possible.
