Seal, Drive Pinion: Removal

- Remove axle shafts. Refer to SHAFT, AXLE, REMOVAL .
- Mark the propeller shaft and pinion flange for installation reference.
- Remove propeller shaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR HEAVY DUTY, REMOVAL .
- Rotate pinion gear (1) three or four times.
- Measure and record the Total Torque To Rotate (TTTR) necessary to rotate the pinion gear and differential with an inch pound torque wrench (2).
- Hold pinion flange (1) with Flange Wrench (special tool #8979, Wrench, Pinion Flange) (2) and remove pinion flange nut.
- Remove pinion flange (1) with Pinion Flange Puller (special tool #8992, Remover, Pinion Flange) (2).
- Remove pinion shaft seal with a seal puller or slide hammer mounted screw.
