Bearing, Axle Shaft: Installation

  1. Install outer hub bearing cup with Installer (special tool #8961, Installer, Bearing Cup) and Handle (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal).
  2. Install inner hub bearing cup with Installer (special tool #8153, Installer, Bearing Cup) and Handle (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal).
  3. Pack bearings with the appropriate wheel bearing grease.
  4. Install rear bearing and install NEW  grease seal with Installer (special tool #8963, Installer, Hub Seal) and Handle (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal).
  5. Install the (special tool #2012800030, Guide, Hub) onto the axle tube.
  6. Slide hub over the guide and onto the axle tube and install front bearing into the hub.

  7. Install hub bearing nut with Socket (special tool #2029500030, Socket, Hub Nut) (1) and tighten with torque wrench (2) to 50 N.m (37 ft. lbs.) while rotating the hub.

  8. Back off nut about 50° and align next hub nut key slot with axle tube key slot (3).
  9. Measure hub end play, hub end play should be 0.025-0.25 mm (0.01-0.001 in.) when measured with a dial indicator. If not in specification, adjust by turning hub nut 1 key slot at a time and re-measure.
  10. Install the hub nut locking key (1).
    NOTE:

    The hooked retainer ring end (4) needs to be facing the forward direction of vehicle travel. The right side axle tube is shown in the photo.

  11. Install retainer ring, straight end (2) first against the hub nut locking key (1), the with hooked retainer ring end (4) in the key slot (3).

  12. Check that the hooked retainer end (1) is fully in the key slot (2).
  13. Install the axle shaft. Refer to SHAFT, AXLE, INSTALLATION .
