Diagnostic Test
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2017 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- With the scan tool, read Body Control Module (BCM) DTCs and record on the repair order.
- Record the Environmental Data and any DTCs.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read BCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes

No
- Test complete. The condition or conditions that originally set this DTC are not present at this time. Using the wiring diagrams as a guide, check all related splices and connectors for signs of water intrusion, corrosion, pushed out or bent terminals and correct pin tension.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (L19) CARGO LAMP DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Left and Right Cargo Lamp harness connectors.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage between ground and the (L19) Cargo Lamp Driver circuit.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the short to voltage in the (L19) Cargo Lamp Driver circuit.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No

- CHECK THE (L19) CARGO LAMP DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the BCM C1/A harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (L19) Cargo Lamp Driver circuit between the Left and Right Cargo Lamp harness connectors and the BCM C1/A harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms for both connections?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Repair the open in the (L19) Cargo Lamp Driver circuit.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (Z914) GROUND CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance of the (Z914) Ground circuits between ground and the Left and Right Cargo Lamp harness connectors.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms for both connections?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Repair the open in the (Z914) Ground circuit.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (Z914) Ground circuits between ground and the Left and Right Cargo Lamp harness connectors.
- CHECK THE BCM FOR CORRECT OPERATION
- Turn the ignition off.
- Connect the BCM C1/A harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Turn the Cargo Lamps on.NOTE:
The test light must illuminate brightly. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.
- Connect a 12-volt test light between the (L19) Cargo Lamp Driver circuit and the (Z914) Ground circuit at the Left or Right Cargo Lamp harness connector.
Does the test light illuminate brightly?
Yes
- Replace the Left or Right Cargo Lamp Bulb in accordance with the Service Information.

- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all BCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all BCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read BCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
