Cylinder Head: Description
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2018 RAM 2500 HD and 2017 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
The cylinder heads that are used in a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle are designed using a high temperature valve and valve seat. Both the intake and the exhaust valves are salt bath nitrated - a surface treatment applied for better wear characteristics in the CNG environment. The use of a CNG fuel creates a hotter combustion chamber which can cause the standard valves and valve seats to prematurely wear. The 5.7 aluminum cylinder head features a valve seat inserts that are a harder powdered metal with advance wear characteristics than current 5.7L gasoline package.
