Old Design Front Seal
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2017 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
The seal lip and the sealing surface on the crankshaft must be free of all oil residue, to prevent leaks. The crankshaft and seal surface must be completely dry when the seal is installed.
- Clean the cover and the gear housing gasket mating surfaces and use caution not to damage the surface. Ensure these surfaces are clean of prior sealant material and do not sand these mating surfaces as this will cause potential leaks. Ensure the front crankshaft seal lip and the crankshaft mating surfaces are free from all oil residue to prevent seal leaks.
- Inspect the gear housing and front cover for damage or cracks and replace if necessary. Inspect the crankshaft mating surface for any grooves or nicks that would affect the integrity of the new seal. Ensure the surface is free of debris before installing the crankshaft seal.
- Apply a bead of Mopar® Stud AND Bearing Mount to the outside diameter of the seal. Do not lubricate the inside diameter of the new seal.
- With the engine timing cover supported by wood blocks, install the seal (2) into the rear of the cover using the (special tool #10136, Installer, Crankshaft Front Oil Seal) (1) and (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (2). Strike the driver handle until the installation tool bottoms out on the inside of the engine timing cover. Ensure the front cover is not damaged from installation of the seal during repair.
- Obtain a seal pilot (1) installation tool from a crankshaft front seal service kit and install the pilot into the seal.
- Apply a bead of Mopar® Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant or equivalent to the gear housing cover. Be sure to surround all through holes.
- Install the engine timing cover by aligning pilot hole in the plastic sleeve assembly in the front crankshaft seal with the dowel pin (1) in the noise of the crankshaft. Install one bolt at the 3 o'clock and another at the 9 o'clock positions. Tighten both bolts finger tight.
- Install the remaining bolts (1, 3) finger tight. Tighten the bolts in a clockwise direction starting with the bolt above the fuel pump access cover to 24 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).
- Remove the plastic sleeve (1) after the engine timing cover is installed on engine.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Install the vibration damper. Refer to DAMPER, VIBRATION, INSTALLATION, 6.7L .
- Install the power steering pump. Refer to PUMP, INSTALLATION
.
- Install the accessory drive belt tensioner (1). Tighten the bolt (2) to 43 N.m (32 ft. lbs.).
- Install the fan drive, viscous fan, and the shroud assembly. Refer to FAN, COOLING, VISCOUS, INSTALLATION .
- Install the upper radiator upper hose.
- Fill the coolant system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Connect both of the battery negative cables.
- Start engine and take vehicle on a short test drive. Verify no oil leak is present by using a blacklight for inspection. Ensure there is dye in the oil prior to inspection of oil leak after front crank seal is installed.
