CAUTION:

The seal lip and the sealing surface on the crankshaft must be free of all oil residue, to prevent leaks. The crankshaft and seal surface must be completely dry when the seal is installed.

  1. Clean the front cover and gear housing gasket mating surfaces and use care not to damage surface. Ensure these surfaces are free and remove any old sealant material and do not sand these mating surface as this will cause potential leaks. Ensure the front crankshaft seal lip and crankshaft mating surfaces are free from all oil residue to prevent further leaks.
  2. Inspect the gear housing and front cover for damage or cracks and replace if necessary. Inspect the crankshaft mating surface for any grooves or nicks that would affect the integrity of the new seal. Ensure the surface is free of debris before installing the crankshaft seal.
  3. Apply a bead of Mopar® Stud N' Bearing Mount to the outside diameter of the seal. Do not lubricate the inside diameter of the new seal.
  4. With the cover supported by wood blocks, install the seal into the rear of the cover using the Front Crankshaft Oil Seal Installer (special tool #10136, Installer, Crankshaft Front Oil Seal) and driver handle (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal). Strike the driver handle until the installation tool bottoms out on the inside of the cover.

    NOTE:

Ensure the front cover is not damaged from installation of the seal during repair.

  5. Install the plastic seal pilot (1) (provided in the seal kit) into the crankshaft seal.
  6. Apply a bead of Mopar® Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant or equivalent to the gear housing cover sealing surface.
    NOTE:

Failure to follow the cover installation procedure can result in misalignment of the crankshaft seal to the crankshaft, causing an oil leak.

  7. Install the front cover by aligning the pilot hole in the plastic sleeve assembled in the front crank seal with the dowel pin (1) in the nose of the crankshaft. Refer to COVER(S), ENGINE TIMING, INSTALLATION, 6.7L .
  8. After the front cover is installed verify the inner diameter of the seal mated against crankshaft surface is not rolled as this will lead to further oil leaks.
  9. Connect both of the negative battery cables.
  10. Start the engine and take vehicle on a short test drive. Verify no oil leak is present by using a black-light for inspection. Ensure there is dye in the oil prior to inspection of oil leak after front crank seal is installed.
