Camshaft, Engine: Installation

NOTE:
If the camshaft main gear is equipped with a scissor gear, the scissor gear teeth must be aligned to the main gear teeth before installing the camshaft. Failure to do so will result in damage to the gears.
- If removed install the tappets. Refer to TAPPET(S), VALVE
- Lubricate the camshaft bearings and with fresh engine oil.
- Liberally coat the thrust plate (2) and the lobes and journals of the camshaft with fresh engine oil.CAUTION: When installing the camshaft, DO NOT push it in farther than it will go with the thrust plate in place.
- Install the camshaft and thrust plate. Align the timing marks as shown.
- Install the thrust plate bolts and tighten to 24 N.m (18 ft. lbs.). Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
- Measure camshaft back lash. Backlash should be within 0.075 - 0.250 mm (0.003 - 0.010 in.).
- Measure camshaft end clearance. End clearance should be within 0.025 - 0.500 mm (0.001 - 0.020 in.).
- Remove the wooden dowel rods and rubber bands from the tappets.
- Lubricate the push rods (1) with engine oil and install in their original location. Verify that they are seated in the tappets.
- Lubricate the valve tips with engine oil and install the crossheads (4) in their original locations.
- Lubricate the crossheads (4) and push rod sockets with engine oil and install the rocker arms (2) and pedestals (3) in their original locations. Tighten bolts (1) to 36 N.m (27 ft. lbs.).
- Verify valve lash adjustment.
- Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD
- Install the engine timing cover. Refer to COVER(S), ENGINE TIMING
- Install the front bumper. Refer to BUMPER, FRONT
- Install the cab. Refer to CAB
