Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2017 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. OTHER DTCS PRESENT
    1. Using the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Is DTC P238C present?

      Yes

      • Perform the Diagnostics for P238C before continuing with this one.

      No

      • Go To  2
  2. WATER IN FUEL
    NOTE:

Both Water in Fuel Separators are internal components of the two Fuel Filters. It is best practice to drain both WIF Separators even if only one triggers the Water in Fuel Lamp.

    NOTE:

If P2269 is also active, both WIF Separators will have to be drained to turn off the WIF Light. Further diagnostics will be required if P238F or P2269 remains active after both WIF Separators have been drained.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Using the service information as a guide, drain both WIF Separators.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Using the scan tool, read DTCs.

Did the DTC become inactive after draining the water in both WIF Separators?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  3
  3. WIF SENSOR 2
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the WIF Sensor 2 harness connector.
      NOTE:

Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.

    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Using the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did DTC P238D become active?

      Yes

      • Replace the WIF Sensor 2 in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE (K303) WIF SENSOR 2 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO the (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
      NOTE:

The GPEC Diagnostic adapter tool can now be used on Cummins applications by utilizing harness adapter 10436-4.

      CAUTION:

Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    3. Connect the (special tool #10436-4, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic Harness).
      NOTE:

Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.

    4. Measure for continuity between the (K303) WIF Sensor 2 Signal circuit and the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit at the WIF Sensor 2 harness connector.

Is there continuity between the two circuits?

      Yes

      • Repair the (K303) WIF Sensor 2 Signal circuit for short to the (K900) Sensor Ground circuit.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No

      • Go To  5
  5. CHECK THE (K303) WIF SENSOR 2 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Measure for continuity between ground and the (K303) WIF Sensor 2 Signal circuit at the WIF Sensor 2 harness connector.

      Is there continuity to ground?

      Yes

      • Repair the (K303) WIF Sensor 2 Signal circuit for short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No

      • Go To  6
  6. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.

Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Using the recorded Freeze Frame and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    10. With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes

      No
