Diagnosis And Testing - Charging System: Inspection
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2012 RAM Pickup and 2012 RAM Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) monitors the critical input and output circuits of the charging system, making sure they are operational. A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is assigned to each input and output circuit monitored by the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system. Some charging system circuits are checked continuously, and some are checked only under certain conditions.
For Diagnostic Trouble Codes, refer to appropriate diagnostic information.
To perform a complete test of the charging system, use a diagnostic scan tool. Perform the following inspections before attaching the scan tool.
- Inspect the battery condition. Refer to INSPECTION .
- Inspect the condition of battery cable terminals, battery posts, connections at engine block, starter solenoid and relays. They should be clean and tight. Repair as required.
- Inspect all the fuses in the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) for tightness in there receptacles. They should be properly installed and tight. Repair or replace as required.
- Inspect the generator mounting bolts for tightness. Replace or tighten the bolts if required. For torque specifications, refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
- Inspect the generator drive belt condition and tension. Tighten or replace the belt as required. Refer to BELT, SERPENTINE .
- Inspect the automatic belt tensioner (when equipped).
- Inspect the generator electrical connections at generator field, battery output, and ground terminal (if equipped). Also check the generator ground wire connection at the engine (if equipped). They should all be clean and tight. Repair as required.
