Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR RELATED ENGINE DTCs
- With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.
Are any Engine Coolant temperature DTCs set?
Yes
- Repair Engine Coolant temperature DTCs. Refer to DTC INDEX - 2500 HD & 3500 HD .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to AS69RC TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 2
- With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.
- CHECK FOR RELATED TRANSMISSION DTCs
- With the scan tool, read TCM DTCs and record on the repair order.
Are any other Transmission temperature sensor DTCs set?
Yes
- Repair Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor DTCs. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC CODE INDEX - AS69RC AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 3500 HD .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to AS69RC TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- With the scan tool, read TCM DTCs and record on the repair order.
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- With the scan tool, read TCM DTCs.
- Record the Event Data and Environmental Data.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read TCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Go To 11
- COMPARE THE TORQUE CONVERTER FLUID TEMPERATURE TO ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE NOTE:
To test the Torque Converter Fluid Temperature sensor, the engine and Transmission temperature must be at or below 29.4° C (85° F).
- CHECK IF THE TORQUE CONVERTER FLUID TEMPERATURE INCREASES 15 DEGREES OVER 10 MINUTE PERIOD NOTE:
To test the torque converter out oil temperature sensor, the engine and transmission temperature must be at or below 29.4° C (85° F).
CAUTION:Apply the parking brake.
- Start the engine, firmly apply the brakes and allow the engine to idle in DRIVE.
- With the scan tool, read the Torque Converter Fluid Temperature.NOTE:
If the torque converter oil temperature sensor is working properly, the transmission temperature should rise at least 8° C (15° F) within a ten minute period.
- Did the torque converter oil temperature increase at a steady rate and rise at least 8° C (15° F) over a 10 minute period?
Yes
- Go To 11
No
- Go To 6
- CHECK (T819) TORQUE CONVERTER FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Transmission Assembly harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage between ground and the (T819) Torque Converter Fluid Temperature Sensor Signal circuit at the Transmission Assembly harness connector.
Is the voltage between 4.9 and 5.1 volts?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Repair the (T819) Torque Converter Fluid Temperature Sensor Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to AS69RC TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (T819) TORQUE CONVERTER FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Torque Converter Fluid Temperature sensor harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read the Torque Converter Fluid Temperature.
Does the Torque Converter Fluid Temperature read -40° C (-40° F) ± 2° C (4° F)?
Yes
- Go To 8
No
- Perform P2743-TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR 2 HIGH as if the DTC is active. Refer to P2743-00-TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR 2 CIRCUIT HIGH .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to AS69RC TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (T819) TORQUE CONVERTER FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Connect a jumper wire between the (T819) Torque Converter Fluid Signal circuit and the (T820) Sensor Ground circuit at the Torque Converter Fluid Temperature sensor harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read the Torque Converter Fluid Temperature.
Does the Torque Converter Fluid Temperature read 200° C (392° F) ± 2° C (4° F)?
Yes
- Go To 9
No
- Perform P2742-TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR 2 LOW as if the DTC is active. Refer to P2742-00-TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR 2 CIRCUIT LOW .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to AS69RC TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE SENSOR
TYPICAL VALUES FOR TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE SENSOR TEMPERATURE APPROXIMATE OHM 25° C (77° F) 10999.7 Ohms 110° C (230° F) 691.7 Ohms - Turn the ignition off.
- If necessary, remove the jumper wire and reconnect the Torque Converter Fluid Temperature sensor harness connector.
- Disconnect the TCM C2 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the Torque Converter Fluid Temperature Sensor between the (T819) Transmission Temperature Signal circuit and the (T820) Sensor Ground circuit in the TCM C2 harness connector.
- Using the table above, compare the Torque Converter Fluid temperature to the correlating resistance value.
Is the resistance within the specified range when the sensor is at the given temperature?
Yes
- Go To 10
No
- Replace the Torque Converter Fluid Temperature Sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to AS69RC TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all TCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Reconnect all TCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read TCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in accordance with the Service information. Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL, REMOVAL .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to AS69RC TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to AS69RC TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- Test complete.
- CHECK WIRING AND CONNECTORS
- The conditions necessary to set the DTC are not present at this time.
- Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors specific to this circuit.
- Wiggle the wires while checking for shorted and open circuits.
- Check for any Service Bulletins that may apply.
Were there any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to AS69RC TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Test complete.
