Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2016 RAM 3500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE CONDITION
    1. Turn the ignition on.
      Shift Lever Position A (T42) B (T3) C (T1) PA (T4)
      P  CLOSED OPEN OPEN CLOSED
      R  CLOSED CLOSED OPEN OPEN
      N  OPEN CLOSED OPEN CLOSED
      D  OPEN CLOSED CLOSED OPEN
Over-Travel (Low Position)  CLOSED CLOSED CLOSED CLOSED
      NOTE:

If all switch positions display Open, check the Transmission Range Switch (TRS) connector for proper installation, and the (F1) Ignition Unlock/Run/Start circuit for an open or short to ground.

With the scan tool, and observing the table above, shift through all Shifter gear positions.

Did all Shifter positions match the table above?

      Yes

      • Go To  10

      No

      • Go To  2
  2. CHECK THE TRS B (T3) SWITCH STATE

Did the TRS B (T3) switch read CLOSED in the PARK position and was that the only error?

    Yes

    • Perform the Shift Cable Adjustment procedure in accordance with the Service Information and recheck with the table above. Refer to CABLE, SHIFT, ADJUSTMENTS .
    • If the B (T3) switch still shows CLOSED in the PARK position, check the (T3) TRS T3 Signal circuit for a short to voltage.
    • Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to AS69RC TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .

    No

    • Go To  3.
  3. CHECK THE TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR SWITCH CLOSED STATUS

Was the error related to one or more switches displaying CLOSED when they should have displayed OPEN?

    Yes

    • Go To  4

    No

    • Note the switch or switches that displayed OPEN when they should have been CLOSED and Go To  5
  4. CHECK THE TRS SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUITS
    1. Disconnect the TRS harness connector.
    2. With the scan tool, read the TRS switch states.

Do all TRS switch states display OPEN?

      Yes

      No

      • Note the switch that displayed CLOSED and Go To  8.
  5. CHECK FOR AN OPEN TRS SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the TCM C2 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the noted switch circuit(s) between the TRS harness connector and the TCM C2 harness connector.

Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      • Go To  6

      No

  6. CHECK THE TRS SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND
    1. Check for continuity between ground and the noted switch circuit at the TRS harness connector.

Is there continuity between ground and the noted switch circuit?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  7
  7. CHECK THE TRS SWITCH
    1. Reconnect the TCM C2 harness connector.
    2. Connect a jumper wire between the (F1) Ignition Unlock/Run/Start circuit and the noted switch circuit at the TRS harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. With the scan tool, read the noted switch circuit.

Does the noted switch circuit display CLOSED?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  9
  8. CHECK FOR TRS SIGNAL CIRCUITS SHORTED TO ANOTHER CIRCUIT
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the TCM C2 harness connector.
    3. Check for continuity between the following circuits and all other circuits at the TCM C2 harness connector.
      • A (T42) TRS T42 Signal
      • B (T3) TRS T43 Signal
      • C (T1) TRS T1 Signal
      • PA (T4) TRS T4 Signal

Is there continuity between any of the TRS Signal circuits and any other circuit?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  9
  9. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
    1. Disconnect all TCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.

Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Reconnect all TCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    10. With the scan tool, read TCM DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes

      No

  10. CHECK THE WIRING AND CONNECTORS
    1. The conditions necessary to set the DTC are not present at this time.
    2. Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors specific to this circuit.
    3. Wiggle the wiring and connectors while checking for shorted and open circuits.
    4. With the scan tool, check the Event Data to help identify the conditions in which the DTC set.

      Were any problems found?
