Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2015 RAM 3500 HD and 2015 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. ACTIVE DTC 
    NOTE:

    Verify that the (30A) F19 Fuse in the PDC is not blown before continuing with this Diagnostic Tree.

    NOTE:

    If there are any other Turbocharger DTCs present, perform the Diagnostics for those DTCs before continuing with this one.

    NOTE:

    If this is the only DTC in the PCM and the MIL is activated, follow Test Steps 2-4. However, Test Step 1 must be completed first.

    NOTE:

    If this is the only DTC in the PCM and the MIL is NOT activated, follow Test Steps 5-11. However, Test Step 1 must be completed first.

    1. Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
    2. With the scan tool, record all Freeze frame data.
    3. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Is this DTC active with the MIL on?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Go To  5
  2. CHECK THE (N639) VGT 12-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO OTHER CIRCUITS ON PCM C1 HARNESS 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the VGT harness connector.
    3. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
      NOTE:

      Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.

    4. Measure the resistance between the (N639) VGT 12-Volt Supply circuit and all other circuits of the PCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms between the (N639) VGT 12-Volt Supply Signal circuit and all other circuits?

      Yes 

      • Go To  3

      No 

      • Repair the (N639) VGT 12-Volt Supply circuit for a short to the circuit that measured below 10k Ohms.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .
  3. CHECK THE (N639) VGT 12-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Measure the resistance of the (N639) VGT 12-Volt Supply circuit between the VGT harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. VGT ACTUATOR 
    1. Reconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    2. Turn the ignition on and wait one minute.
    3. With a voltmeter connected to ground, measure the voltage on the (N639) VGT 12-Volt Supply circuit at the VGT harness connector.

      Is the voltage within 1.0 Volts of Battery Voltage?

      Yes 

      • Replace the VGT Actuator Assembly in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .

      No 

  5. CHECK THE (F203) SCR MODULE HEATER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    1. Turn ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the DEF Dosing Control Unit C1 harness connector.
    3. Remove the (30A) F19 Fuse in the PDC.
    4. Turn the ignition on.
    5. With a Voltmeter connected to ground, measure the voltage on the (F203) SCR Module Heater Supply circuit at the DEF Dosing Control Unit C1 harness connector.

      Is there voltage present?

      Yes 

      • Go To  6

      No 

      • Go To  7
  6. CHECK THE (F203) SCR MODULE HEATER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    1. Turn ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PDC C5 harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. With a voltmeter connected to ground, measure the voltage on the (F203) SCR Module Heater Supply circuit at the PDC C5 harness connector (on the PDC side of the connector).

      Is there voltage present?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Power Distribution Center in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .

      No 

      • Repair the (F203) SCR Module Heater Supply circuit (in the harness between the PDC and the DEF Dosing Control Unit) for a short to voltage.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .
  7. CHECK THE (F203) SCR MODULE HEATER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PDC C5 harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Measure the resistance of the (F203) SCR Module Heater Supply circuit between the PDC C5 harness connector (on the PDC side of the connector) and the (30A) F19 Fuse (terminal going to the relay).

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  8

      No 

      • Replace the Power Distribution Center in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .
  8. CHECK THE (F203) SCR MODULE HEATER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Measure the resistance between ground and the (F203) SCR Module Heater Supply circuit at the PDC C5 harness connector (on the PDC side of the connector).

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  9

      No 

      • Replace the Power Distribution Center in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .
  9. CHECK THE (F203) SCR MODULE HEATER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Measure the resistance of the (F203) SCR Module Heater Supply circuit between the PDC C5 harness connector and the DEF Dosing Control Unit C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  10

      No 

      • Repair the (F203) SCR Module Heater Supply circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L .
  10. CHECK THE (F203) SCR MODULE HEATER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Measure the resistance between ground and the (F203) SCR Module Heater Supply circuit at the DEF Dosing Control Unit C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  11

      No 

  11. DEF DOSING CONTROL UNIT 
    1. Replace the DEF Dosing Control Unit in accordance with the service information.
    2. Turn the ignition on, engine not running.
    3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    4. With the scan tool, navigate to Actuator Tests and actuate the DEF Line Heater or Tank Heater Override Test.
    5. With the scan tool, View DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No
