Cover(S), Engine Timing: Removal: Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Remove air cleaner assembly (2, 4).
  3. Remove the engine cover (1).

  4. Drain cooling system.
  5. Remove the fan drive assembly.

  6. Remove accessory drive belt (3).
  7. Remove fan shroud.
    NOTE:

    It is not necessary to disconnect A/C lines or discharge refrigerant.

  8. Remove A/C compressor and position aside.

  9. Remove the A/C line support brace (2).

  10. Remove the generator and position aside.

  11. Remove upper radiator hose (1) at the thermostat housing (3).
  12. Disconnect the temperature sensor electrical connector (2).

  13. Disconnect both heater hoses (2) at timing cover.
  14. Disconnect lower radiator hose (1) at the water pump.

  15. Remove accessory drive belt tensioner and both idler pulleys.
  16. Remove crankshaft damper (2). Refer to DAMPER, VIBRATION, REMOVAL, 5.7L  .
  17. If equipped, remove power steering pump and set aside.
  18. Raise the vehicle.
    NOTE:

    If equipped with 4WD. The front axle housing requires to be lowered but does not require removal from the vehicle.

  19. Drain the engine oil.

  20. If equipped, remove the front skid plate (2).

  21. Disconnect and position aside the axle disconnect actuator (2) wiring connector (1).

  22. Mark (4) and remove the front drive shaft (2) at the front axle flange (1).

  23. Remove the bolts (1) that support the axle pinion to the transmission.

  24. Using a suitable jack. Support the axle.
  25. Remove the axle support bolts (2, 5).
  26. Lower the axle.

  27. Remove the oil pan.
    NOTE:

    It is not necessary to remove water pump for timing cover removal.

  28. Lower the vehicle.

  29. Remove timing cover bolts and remove cover.
  30. Verify that timing cover slide bushings (1) are located in timing cover.
