Theory Of Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2015 RAM 1500. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The Crank Position (CKP) Sensor transmits the engine crankshaft speed to the engine controller. The engine controller transmits the engine speed over CAN to the transmission controller though an internal CAN bus. The transmission controller then compares that signal to a calculated value based on input and output speed sensor signals to determine if the engine speed signal is valid.

NOTE:

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) are integrated into one unit. Therefore, the CAN communication between the modules is internal and unserviceable.
