Cooler, Transmission Oil: Operation: Operation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2015 RAM 1500. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
On all models equipped with an automatic transmission, the transmission oil is routed through the transmission oil cooler where heat is removed from the transmission oil before returning to the transmission. The transmission oil cooler has an internal thermostat that controls oil flow through the cooler. When the transmission oil is cold (less then operating temperature), the oil is routed through the cooler bypass. When the transmission oil reaches operating temperatures and above, the thermostat closes off the bypass allowing the oil to flow through the cooler. The thermostat is serviceable.
The torque converter oil cooler is used to cool the torque converter through an oil-to water transmission oil cooler.
