Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2014 RAM 3500 HD and 2014 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    1. With the scan tool, read TCM DTCs and record on the repair order.
    2. Record the event data and enviromental data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    4. Using the recorded Event and Enviromental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    5. With the scan tool, read TCM DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Go To
  2. CHECK FOR AN OPEN FUSE 
    1. Turn the ignition OFF.
    2. Using the wiring diagram as a guide, check the fuse for the Transmission Control Relay.

      Was the fuse open?

      Yes 

      • Repair (T16) Transmission Control Output circuit for a short to ground and replace the fuse.
      • Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST, Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL OUTPUT 
    1. Turn the ignition OFF.
    2. Remove the Starter Relay.
      CAUTION: Removal of the starter relay will prevent the vehicle from being started in gear.
      WARNING: The Starter Relay must be removed. Failure to do so can result in possible serious or fatal injury.
    3. Install Transmission Simulator 833B.
    4. Turn the ignition on.

      Does the Transmission Simulator 833B turn on?

      Yes 

      • Go To 9

      No 

      • Go to  4
  4. CHECK THE (T15) TRANSMISSION CONTROL AND PDC 
    1. Turn the ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
    3. Using a fused jumper wire or 12-volt test light connected to 12-volts, jumper the (T15) Transmission Control circuit on the appropriate terminal of the PCM C1 harness connector to actuate the internal Transmission relay in the PDC.
    4. Turn the ignition ON.

      Does the Transmission Simulator 833B turn on?

      Yes 

      • Check the (T15) Transmission Control circuit connection at the PCM C1 connector. If no trouble is found, go to  5.
      • Perform the 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to the 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go to  6
  5. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:

      Proper connector installation

      Damaged connector locks.

      Corrosion

      Other signs of water intrusion.

      Weather seal damage (if equipped)

      Bent terminals

      Overheating due to poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).

      Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.

      Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    10. With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No 

  6. VERIFY PDC OPERATION  
    1. Using a fused jumper wire or 12-volt test light connected to 12 volts, momentarily jumper the (T15) Transmission Control circuit on the appropriate terminal of the PCM C1 harness connector several times to actuate the internal transmission relay in the PDC.

      Can the PDC be heard clicking when the jumping the (T15) Transmission Control circuit?

      Yes 

      • Go to 11

      No 

      • Go To  7
  7. CHECK THE (T15) TRANSMISSION CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    1. Disconnect the PDC C3 harness connector
    2. Measure the resistance of the (T15) Transmission Control circuit between the PDC C3 harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go to 8

      No 

  8. CHECK WIRING AND CONNECTORS 
    1. Disconnect all PDC harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect the related PCM harness connectors.
    3. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:

      Proper connector installation.

      Damaged connector locks.

      Corrosion.

      Other signs of water intrusion.

      Weather seal damage (if equipped).

      Bent terminals.

      Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw)

      Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.

      Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Reconnect all PDC harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Reconnect all related PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    10. With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in accordance with the Service information.
      • Perform the 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to the 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST  .

      No 

  9. CHECK THE (T16) TRANSMISSION CONTROL OUTPUT CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE PDC AND PCM 
    1. Using a fused jumper wire connected to 12 volts, jumper the (T15) Transmission Control circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector to actuate the internal transmission relay in the PDC.
    2. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, check all the (T16) Transmission Control Output circuits at the appropriate terminals of the PCM C1 harness connector.
      NOTE: The (T16) Transmission Control Output circuit branches off to both the Transmission Solenoid/TRS Assembly and PCM.
      NOTE: The test light must illuminate brightly. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.

      Does the test light illuminate brightly for all (T16) Transmission Control Output circuits?

      Yes 

      • Go to 10

      No 

      • Repair the (T16) Transmission Control circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to the 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST  .
  10. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:

      Proper connector installation.

      Damaged connector locks.

      Corrosion.

      Other signs of water intrusion.

      Weather seal damage (if equipped).

      Bent terminals.

      Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).

      Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.

      Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.

    5. Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs
    9. Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    10. With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No 

  11. CHECK THE (T16) TRANSMISSION CONTROL OUTPUT CIRCUIT 
    1. Disconnect the Transmission Simulator 8333B .
    2. Disconnect the PDC C3 harness connector.
      NOTE: The (T16) Transmission Control Output circuit branches off to both the Transmission Solenoid/TRS Assembly and PCM.
    3. Measure the resistance of the (T16) Transmission Control Output circuit between the PDC C3 harness connector, the Transmission Solenoid/TRS Assembly, and the appropriate terminals at the PCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms for each measurement?

      Yes 

      • Go to 12

      No 

      • Repair the (T16) Transmission Control circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to the 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST  .
  12. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all PDC harness connectors.
    2. . Disconnect the related PCM harness connectors.
    3. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:

      Proper connector installation.

      Damaged connector locks.

      Corrosion.

      Other signs of water intrusion.

      Weather seal damage (if equipped).

      Bent terminals.

      Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).

      Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.

      Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.

    5. Reconnect all PDC harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Reconnect all related PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    10. With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in accordance with the Service information.
      • Perform the 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to the 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST  .

      No 

  13. CHECK WIRING AND CONNECTORS FOR INTERMITTENT CONNECTIONS 
    1. The conditions necessary to set this DTC are not present at this time.
    2. Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors specific to this circuit.
    3. Wiggle the wires while checking for shorted and open circuits.
    4. With the scan tool, check the Event Data to help identify the conditions in which the DTC set.

      Where there any problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Test complete.
