Diagnostic Test
- ACTIVE DTC NOTE:
Diagnose any Misfire DTCs before continuing.
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- With a scan tool, read the DTCs.
Is the DTC active at this time?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECKING THE MDS SOLENOID CONTROL CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE MDS IN-LINE HARNESS CONNECTOR AND THE PCM NOTE:
The DTC must not be active for the actuator test to operate properly, clear all DTC before continuing.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the MDS in-line harness connector.
- Using a 12-volt test light, jumper from the Ground circuit and the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit in the MDS in-line harness connector (PCM side).
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the scan tool, actuate the MDS Solenoid 4.
Does the 12-volt test light flash on and off?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Go To 4
- MDS SOLENOID RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Measure the resistance between the Ground circuit and the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit in the MDS in-line harness connector (MDS side).NOTE:
It is important to follow the below temp/resistance values to insure an accurate reading.
MDS SOLENOID RESISTANCE TEMPERATURE VALUE RESISTANCE - MINIMUM RESISTANCE - MAXIMUM -18° C (0° F) 7.22 Ω 8.12 Ω 0° C (32° F) 7.92 Ω 8.82 Ω 20° C (68° F) 8.72 Ω 9.62 Ω 38° C (100° F) 9.42 Ω 10.32 Ω 66° C (150° F) 10.62 Ω 11.52 Ω 93° C (200° F) 11.82 Ω 12.72 Ω 121° C (250° F) 12.82 Ω 13.72 Ω 149° C (300° F) 14.02 Ω 14.92 Ω Is the resistance within an acceptable range?
Yes
- Go To 12
No
- Go To 8
- CHECK THE (Z903) GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (PCM SIDE)
- Turn the ignition off.
- Using a 12-volt test light connected to the 12 volts, probe the (Z903) Ground circuit in the MDS in-line harness connector (PCM side).
Does the test light illuminate brightly?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Repair the (Z903) Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K452) MDS SOLENOID 4 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE (PCM SIDE)
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- Measure the voltage on the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit in the MDS in-line harness connector.
Does the Voltmeter indicate voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the short to battery voltage in the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit between the PCM harness connector and MDS in-line harness connector.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- CHECK THE (K452) MDS SOLENOID 4 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND (PCM SIDE)
- Turn the ignition off.
- Measure the resistance between ground and the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit in the MDS in-line harness connector.
Is the resistance below 10k Ohms?
Yes
- Repair the short to ground in the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit between the PCM harness connector and the MDS in-line harness connector.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 7
- CHECK THE (K452) MDS SOLENOID 4 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (PCM SIDE) CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.
- Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic).
- Measure the resistance of the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit from the MDS in-line harness connector to the GPEC Adaptor.
Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the service information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL, REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair the open in the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit between the MDS in-line harness connector and the PCM harness connector.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (Z903) GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (MDS SIDE)
- Turn the ignition off.
- Gain access to the MDS Solenoid. Refer to SOLENOID, MULTIPLE DISPLACEMENT, REMOVAL .
- Disconnect the MDS harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (Z903) Ground circuit between the MDS in-line harness connector and the MDS harness connector.
Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 9
No
- Repair the (Z903) Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K452) MDS SOLENOID 4 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE (MDS SIDE)

Yes
- Repair the short to battery voltage in the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit between the MDS in-line harness connector and the MDS connector.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 10
- CHECK THE (K452) MDS SOLENOID 4 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND (MDS SIDE)
- Turn the ignition off.
- Measure the resistance between ground and the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit in the MDS Solenoid 4 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 100 Ohms?
Yes
- Repair the short to ground in the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit between the MDS in-line harness connector and the MDS harness connector.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 11
- CHECK THE (K452) MDS SOLENOID 4 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN (MDS SIDE)
- Measure the resistance of the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit from the MDS Solenoid 4 harness connector to the MDS in-line harness connector (MDS side).
Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Replace the MDS Solenoid in accordance with the service information. Refer to SOLENOID, MULTIPLE DISPLACEMENT, REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair the open in the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit between the MDS in-line harness connector and the MDS harness connector.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (K452) MDS Solenoid 4 Control circuit from the MDS Solenoid 4 harness connector to the MDS in-line harness connector (MDS side).
- CHECKING HARNESS CONNECTOR MDS IN-LINE AND GROUND CONNECTION
- Inspect the MDS in-line harness connector.
- Make sure the Ground terminal and Control terminal are fastened securely into the connector and there are no signs of corrosion or damage.
- Check wiring to terminal connection. Look for an internal broken wire under the insulation.
- Inspect the Ground for a tight, clean connection.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
