Diagnostic Test

  1. ACTIVE DTC 
    NOTE:

    If DTCs P05F3 or P05F5 are present, perform the Diagnostics for those DTCs before continuing with this one.

    1. Ignition on, engine not running.
    2. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Is this DTC active?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Perform to the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT DTC .
  2. CHECK SYSTEM VOLTAGE 
    1. Check the Batteries and charging system for proper system voltage and operation.

      Are the Batteries and charging system operating correctly and producing the proper system voltage?

      Yes 

      • Go To  3

      No 

      • Diagnose and repair the Batteries and charging system before continuing.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  3. OTHER DTCS 
    NOTE:

    Repair any Voltage Low DTCs before proceeding with this test procedure.

    NOTE:

    The Datalinks are BUS circuits which the PCM uses to communicate with the Particulate Matter Sensor, DEF Heating Control Unit, NOx Sensor 1/1 and Nox Sensor 1/2. If a Datalink circuit is shorted or one of these components is internally shorted, communication will be lost and DTCs will set against ALL of these components.

    Are there lost communication DTCs present against any components (other than Particulate Matter Sensor) listed in the note above?

    Yes 

    • Go To  8

    No 

    • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE (F204) FUSED IGNITION SWITCH CIRCUIT AND THE (Z909) PARTICULATE MATTER SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND OR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the engine off.
    2. Disconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor (vehicle harness) harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on, engine off.
    4. Measure the voltage across the (F204) Fused Ignition Switch circuit and the (Z909) Particulate Matter Sensor Ground circuit at the Particulate Matter Sensor (vehicle harness) harness connector.

      Does the voltage read within 1.0 Volt of battery voltage?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Repair the (F204) Fused Ignition Switch circuit for an open or short to ground, or check the (Z909) Ground circuit for an open.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor, NOx Sensor Modules, DEF Heater Control Unit, and the PCM C1 harness connectors.
    3. Measure the resistance between ground and the (D469) High Datalink (+) circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector.
    4. Measure the resistance between ground and the (D468) Low Datalink (-) circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms for both circuits?

      Yes 

      • Go To  6

      No 

      • Repair the Datalink circuit that did not measure above 10k Ohms for a short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  6. CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Measure the resistance of the (D469) High Datalink (+) circuit between the Particulate Matter Sensor harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.
    2. Measure the resistance of the (D468) Low Datalink (-) circuit between the Particulate Matter Sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 5.0 Ohms for either circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the Datalink circuit that measured above 5.0 Ohms for an open/high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  7
  7. CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    1. Measure the resistance of the (D469) High Datalink (+) circuit to all other circuits on the PCM C1 harness connector at the PCM C1 harness connector.
    2. Measure the resistance of the (D468) Low Datalink (-) circuit to all other circuits on the PCM C1 harness connector at the PCM C1 harness connector.
      NOTE:

      Disregard any resistance between 50 and 70 Ohms between the (D469) High Datalink (+) and the (D468) Low Datalink (-) pins.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms for both measurements?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Particulate Matter Sensor in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Repair the Datalink circuit for a short to the circuit that did not measure above 10k Ohms.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  8. CHECK THE COMPONENTS ON THE DATALINK CIRCUITS 
    NOTE:

    Disconnect only one component at a time during this next step. If the DTCs for the components that are STILL CONNECTED change from active to stored, the component that was disconnected is faulty. If all of the DTCs remain active, then the disconnected component is not the problem. Reconnect each component before going on to the next one so that only one component is disconnected at a time.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Reconnect all four components connected to the Datalink circuits.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. With the scan tool, erase PCM DTCs.
    5. Turn the ignition off.
    6. Disconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off the three times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.
      NOTE:

      Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.

    7. Turn the ignition off and reconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor harness connector.
    8. Disconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/1 harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off three times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.
      NOTE:

      Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.

    9. Turn the ignition off and reconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/1 harness connector.
    10. Disconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/2 harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off three times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.
      NOTE:

      Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.

    11. Turn the ignition off and reconnect the NOx Sensor Module 1/2 harness connector.
    12. Disconnect the DEF Heater Control Unit harness connector. Cycle the ignition key on and off three times ending with the ignition on. Leave the ignition in the off position for 75 seconds each time.
      NOTE:

      Monitor the status of the DTCs for the remaining connected components with the scan tool.

      Did the status of the DTCs change to stored for the components STILL CONNECTED when disconnecting any one of the components listed above?

      Yes 

      • Replace the component that caused the DTC change from active to stored in accordance with the service information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  9
  9. CHECK THE (F204) FUSED IGNITION SWITCH CIRCUIT AND THE (Z909) NOX SENSOR 1/1 GROUND CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND OR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Turn the engine off.
    2. Disconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor (vehicle harness) harness connector.
    3. Turn the ignition on, engine off.
    4. Measure the voltage across the (F204) Fused Ignition Switch circuit and the (Z909) Particulate Matter Sensor Ground circuit at the Particulate Matter Sensor (vehicle harness) harness connector.

      Does the voltage read within 1.0 Volt of battery voltage?

      Yes 

      • Go To  10

      No 

      • Repair the (F204) Fused Ignition Switch circuit for an open or short to ground, or check the (Z909) Ground circuit for an open.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  10. CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor, NOx Sensor Modules, DEF Heater Control Unit, and the PCM C1 harness connectors.
    3. Measure the resistance between ground and the (D469) High Datalink (+) circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector.
    4. Measure the resistance between ground and the (D468) Low Datalink (-) circuit at the PCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms for both circuits?

      Yes 

      • Go To  11

      No 

      • Repair the Datalink circuit that did not measure above 10k Ohms for a short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  11. CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Measure the resistance of the (D469) High Datalink (+) circuit between the Particulate Matter Sensor harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.
    2. Measure the resistance of the (D468) Low Datalink (-) circuit between the Particulate Matter Sensor harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance above 5.0 Ohms for either circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the Datalink circuit that measured above 5.0 Ohms for an open/high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  12
  12. CHECK THE DATALINK CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    1. Measure the resistance of the (D469) High Datalink (+) circuit to all other circuits on the PCM C1 harness connector at the PCM C1 harness connector.
    2. Measure the resistance of the (D468) Low Datalink (-) circuit to all other circuits on the PCM C1 harness connector at the PCM C1 harness connector.
      NOTE:

      Disregard any resistance between 50 and 70 Ohms between the (D469) High Datalink (+) and the (D468) Low Datalink (-) pins.

      Is the resistance above 10k Ohms for both measurements?

      Yes 

      • Go To  13

      No 

      • Repair the Datalink circuit for a short to the circuit that did not measure above 10k Ohms.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .
  13. PARTICULATE MATTER SENSOR 
    NOTE:

    The Particulate Matter Sensor consists of a Module and a Probe (with a harness in between) which cannot be serviced separately. They are replaced as one unit.

    1. Replace the Particulate Matter Sensor in accordance with the service information.
    2. Reconnect the Particulate Matter Sensor, NOx Sensor Modules, DEF Heater Control Unit, and the PCM C1 harness connectors.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. With the scan tool, erase PCM DTCs.
    5. Start the engine and run it until it reaches operating temperature.
    6. Test drive the vehicle under normal operating conditions.
      NOTE:

      During cold ambient temperatures, it may be necessary to test drive the vehicle for an extended period to properly cycle the fail conditions for this DTC.

    7. With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.

      Does the scan tool display this DTC?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the service information. Refer to REMOVAL .
      • Perform the PCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to PCM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No
