Section 580 (8HP70 Automatic Transmission (Service Information) 1500): Removal: 5.7L

- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the exhaust pipe below the transmission pan. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, REMOVAL .
- For 4WD only , remove the transfer case. For BW44-44, refer to REMOVAL For BW44-45, refer to REMOVAL .
- For RWD only , remove the rear propeller shaft.
- Remove the starter from the transmission and set aside. Refer to 5.7L .
- Disconnect the manual park release cable (1) from the lever (2).
- Remove the bolts from the manual park release cable bracket (3) and set the bracket/cable (2, 3) aside.
- The converter is attached with three sets of two bolts (1) 120° apart as shown in illustration below.
- Rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction for access, and through the starter opening, remove the six converter bolts (1).
- Turn the locking mechanism lock (1) of the adapter plug connector (2) counterclockwise to release the lock.
- Remove the adapter plug connector (1) from the transmission.
- Disconnect all wiring harness clips (1) from the transmission case.
- Remove the coolant line bracket bolt (1) from the right side of the transmission case.
- Remove the trans line bracket bolt (1) from the right side of the transmission case.
- Disconnect the coolant lines (2) from the transmission heater.
- Remove the left side bolt (2) from trans line bracket.
- Remove the fuel lines (1) from the clip (2) attached to the transmission heater.
- Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler lines (1) from the transmission heater using (special tool #9546, Disconnect Tool)
CAUTION:
When supporting or lifting the transmission at the oil pan the weight of the transmission must be distributed evenly on the lifting fixture. Failure to do so could damage the oil pan and transmission.
- Place a suitable transmission jack under transmission pan and secure it with chains.
- Raise the transmission slightly with a service jack (1) to relieve load on the crossmember.
- Remove the bolts attaching the crossmember (1) to frame and remove the crossmember (2).
- Remove the bolts securing the rear support and cushion to the cross member and remove.
- Remove the bell housing bolts (1) on the RH side.
- Remove the bell housing bolts (1) on the LH side.
- Remove all remaining bell housing bolts (1, 2) securing the transmission to the engine block.
- Hold the torque converter in place during transmission removal.
- Lower the transmission and remove the assembly from the vehicle.
- For 4WD only , remove the adapter bracket bolts (1) and the adapter from the transmission.
