Gear, Ring And Pinion: Installation: Installation
The ring gear and pinion are serviced in a matched set. Do not replace one gear without replacing the other matching gear. If ring and pinion gears or bearings are replaced, for Pinion Gear Depth Setting. Refer to ADJUSTMENTS . Do not reuse bearings.
- Install pinion depth shim behind rear pinion bearing cup.
- Install a NEW rear pinion bearing cup with (special tool #C-4310, Installer, Bearing) (1) and (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (2) and verify cup is seated.
- Install a NEW front pinion bearing cup with (special tool #D-129, Installer, Bearing Cup) (1) and (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (2) and verify cup is seated.
- Install a NEW front pinion bearing into the housing.
- Install a NEW seal with (special tool #C-4076-B, Installer, Seal) (3) and (special tool #C-4735, Handle, Driver) (1).
- Install a NEW rear bearing (4) on the pinion (3) with (special tool #C-3095-A, Installer, Bearing) (2) and a press (1).
- Install a new collapsible spacer (1) on the pinion shaft.
- Apply Mopar® Thread Sealant to splines of the pinion shaft.
- Align marks on the pinion and companion flange and install with (special tool #C-3718, Installer, Flange) and (special tool #6719A, Holder, Yoke).
- Install bolts into two of the threaded holes in the companion flange 180° apart.
- Position (special tool #6719A, Holder, Yoke) (2) against the companion flange and install a bolt and washer into one of the remaining threaded holes. Tighten the bolts so the (special tool #6719A, Holder, Yoke) is held to the flange.
- Install a NEW pinion nut.
- Hold companion flange with (special tool #6719A, Holder, Yoke) (2) and tighten pinion nut with a torque wrench (3) to 285 N.m (210 ft. lbs.).NOTE:
Do not exceed minimum torque 285 N.m (210 ft. lbs.) at this point.
- Rotate pinion several times to seat pinion bearings.
- Measure pinion torque to rotate (1) with an inch pound torque wrench (2). Measure pinion rotating torque frequently to avoid over-crushing the collapsible spacer.
Pinion Torque To Rotate is:
- New Bearings:
1.9 - 2.5 N.m (17 - 22 in. lbs.)NOTE:
If pinion torque to rotate is low, tighten pinion nut in 6.8 N.m (5 ft. lbs.) increments until pinion torque to rotate is achieved.
NOTE:Once proper pinion torque to rotate is achieved, the pinion nut must be staked to the pinion to prevent pinion nut movement.
CAUTION:Never loosen pinion nut to decrease pinion bearing rotating torque. If pinion torque to rotating is exceeded a new collapsible spacer must be installed. Failure to follow these instruction will damage the axle.
- New Bearings:
1.9 - 2.5 N.m (17 - 22 in. lbs.)
- Position ring gear (3) on the differential case (4) and start two ring gear bolts (2). This will provide case-to-ring gear bolt hole alignment.
- Invert the differential case in the vise.
- Install new
ring gear bolts and alternately tighten to 225 N.m (166 ft. lbs.).CAUTION:
Never reuse the ring gear bolts. Failure to follow these instruction will result in damage.
- Install differential in housing and verify gear mesh, backlash and contact pattern. Refer to ADJUSTMENTS .
