Seal, Drive Pinion: Removal: Removal

CAUTION:
If the pinion seal is being removed or replaced, the pinion bearings, collapsible spacer and pinion flange nut must be replaced.
- Mark companion flange and pinion shaft threads for installation reference.
- Remove drive shaft from the companion flange.
- Remove the brake rotors to prevent any drag.
- Rotate companion flange three or four times.
- Record pinion torque to rotate (1) with an inch pound torque wrench (2).
- Install two bolts into the companion flange threaded holes, 180° apart. Position (special tool #6719A, Holder, Yoke) against the companion flange and install and tighten two bolts and washers into the remaining holes.
- Hold the companion flange with (special tool #6719A, Holder, Yoke) and remove pinion nut.
- Mark a line across the pinion shaft and flange for installation reference.
- Remove companion flange with (special tool #C-452, Puller, Companion Flange) (2).
- Remove pinion seal with seal puller or slide-hammer mounted screw.
