Manifold, Intake: Removal: Upper

NOTE:

The engine cover is bonded to the air intake assembly. Do not attempt to separate them. The cover and intake must be removed as an assembly.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  2. Separate the air cleaner cover (2) from the lower housing (4).

  3. Loosen the clamp at the throttle body (1).
  4. Disconnect the IAT sensor electrical connector (2).

  5. Remove the breather hose (1) from the resonator (2).
  6. Remove the resonator from the vehicle.

  7. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor (1) and the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) (6).
  8. Remove the ETC harness from the clip (5) on the throttle body.
  9. Remove the wire harness retainer (2) from the upper intake manifold.
  10. Remove the wire harness retainers (3 and 4) from the left front upper intake manifold support bracket and reposition the wire harness.

  11. Disconnect the electrical connector (3) to the purge solenoid (2).
  12. Remove the purge solenoid from the mounting bracket and position aside.

  13. Disconnect the following hoses from the upper intake manifold:
    • Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) (1)
    • Vapor purge (3)
    • Brake booster (2)

  14. Remove two nuts (2), two bolts (3) and the left front upper intake manifold support bracket (1).

  15. Disengage the brake booster hose retainer (1) from the left rear upper intake manifold support bracket.
  16. Disengage the wire harness retainers (2) from the left rear upper intake manifold support bracket and reposition the wire harness.

  17. Remove two nuts (2) from the left rear upper intake manifold support bracket (1).
  18. Loosen two studbolts (3) and reposition the left rear upper intake manifold support bracket (1) away from the upper intake manifold.

  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20. Disengage and reposition the following hoses from the upper intake manifold:
    • Transfer case vent (3)
    • Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) (5)
    • Fresh air makeup (4)
  21. Disengage the wire harness retainer (1) from the upper intake manifold.
  22. Disengage the wire harness connector retainer (2) from the right upper intake manifold support bracket.
  23. Disengage two purge tube retainers (6) from the right upper intake manifold support bracket.

  24. NOTE:

    The upper intake manifold attaching bolts are captured in the upper intake manifold. Once loosened, the bolts will have to be lifted out of the lower intake manifold and held while removing the upper intake manifold.

    NOTE:

    Exercise care not to inadvertently loosen the two fuel rail attachment bolts that are in close proximity of the upper intake manifold attaching bolts.

  25. Remove seven upper intake manifold attaching bolts (1) and remove the upper intake manifold (2).

  26. Remove and discard the six upper to lower intake manifold seals (1).
  27. Cover the open intake ports to prevent debris from entering the engine.
  28. If required, remove the insulator (2) from the LH cylinder head cover.
  29. If required, remove the push-pins (2) and the rear insulation pad (1) from the upper intake manifold.
  30. If required, remove the Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) sensor from the upper intake manifold. Refer to SENSOR, MANIFOLD AIR PRESSURE (MAP), REMOVAL .
  31. If required, remove the throttle body from the upper intake manifold. Refer to THROTTLE BODY, REMOVAL .
