Upper - 4WD

  1. Secure the steering wheel in the centered position.
  2. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  3. Remove the air intake resonator.

  4. Separate the lower steering intermediate shaft coupler (1) from the steering gear (2).

  5. Remove the oil indicator (2) and position aside.
  6. Position the engine (special tool #8534B, Fixture, Driveline Support) over the engine. Do not raise the engine at this time.
  7. Raise the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  8. If equipped, remove the front skid plate and the front suspension skid plate.

  9. Remove the steering gear (2). Refer to GEAR, INDEPENDENT FRONT SUSPENSION, REMOVAL .
  10. NOTE:

    The front differential assembly does not require to be removed from the vehicle. The CV joints do not need to be removed when separating the differential from the engine.

  11. Separate the front differential assembly (1) from the engine mounts.
  12. Remove the differential housing support bracket (2).

  13. Remove the inner engine mount support bracket through bolts (2).
  14. Loosen the outer engine mount support bracket bolts (4).
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Using care, raise the engine till the engine is cleared from the engine mounts.
  17. Raise the vehicle.
    NOTE:

    The lower oil pan must be removed to access all of the upper oil pan retaining bolts.

  18. Drain the engine oil. Refer to LUBRICATION/OIL - STANDARD PROCEDURE  .
  19. Remove the lower oil pan bolts (1) and nuts (3).

  20. Separate the transmission cooler line retainer (1) from the oil pan flange.

  21. Remove two rubber plugs (1) covering the rear oil seal retainer flange bolts.

    CAUTION:

    There are two hidden M6 bolts that must be removed from the rear of the upper oil pan flange. If these bolts are not removed, the rear oil seal retainer flange will be severely damaged.

  22. Remove two M6 bolts (1) from the rear oil seal retainer flange.

  23. Remove four transmission to the engine oil pan bolts (1).

  24. Remove nineteen M8 oil pan mounting bolts (1).

  25. Using the four indicated pry points in illustration, carefully remove the upper oil pan.
  26. Remove all residual sealant from the upper and lower oil pans, timing chain cover, rear seal retainer and engine block mating surfaces. Refer to PAN, OIL, CLEANING .
