Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2017 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, erase DTCs in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    3. With the scan tool, actuate the SRV Solenoid Control State.
    4. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Is the DTC active?

      Yes

      • Go To  2

      No

  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

Are there any system voltage or sensor supply voltage DTCs active or pending?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE SHORT RUNNER VALVE ASSEMBLY FOR PROPER OPERATION
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Short Runner Valve harness connector.
    3. Connect a jumper wire between the (Z908) Sensor Ground circuit and the (K237) SRV signal circuit in the Short Runner Valve Assembly harness connector.
    4. Turn the ignition on.
    5. With the scan tool, read the SRV PWM Feedback.
      NOTE:

The SRV PWM Feedback should be less than 3% with the jumper wire in place.

Is the SRV PWM Feedback less than 3%?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  4
        NOTE:

Remove the jumper wire before continuing.

  4. CHECK THE (F342) ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
    1. With the scan tool, actuate the Auto Shutdown (ASD) Relay Control State.
    2. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, check the (F342) ASD Relay Output circuit at the Short Runner Valve harness connector.
      NOTE:

The test light should be illuminated and bright. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.

Is the test light illuminated and bright?

      Yes

      • Go To  5

      No

      • Repair the (F342) ASD Relay Output circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK THE (Z908) SRV GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the (Z908) SRV Ground circuit in the Short Runner Valve harness connector to ground.

Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      • Go To  6

      No

      • Repair the (Z908) SRV Ground circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  6. CHECK THE (K237) SRV SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. Measure the voltage between ground and the (K237) SRV signal circuit at the SRV harness connector.

      Is there any voltage present?

      Yes

      • Repair the (K237) SRV signal circuit for a short to voltage.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No

      • Go To  7
  7. CHECK THE (K237) SRV SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
    1. Turn the ignition off.
      CAUTION:

Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    2. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic).
    3. Measure the resistance of the (K237) SRV signal circuit between the SRV harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.

Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      • Go To  8

      No

      • Repair the (K237) SRV Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  8. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
    1. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
