Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- With the scan tool, read TCM DTCs and record on the repair order.
- Record the Event Data and Environmental Data.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read TCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Go To 13
- CHECK FOR AN OPEN FUSE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Using the wiring diagram as a guide, check the fuse for the Transmission Control relay.
Was the fuse open?
Yes
- Repair the (T16) Transmission Control Output circuit for a short to ground and replace the fuse.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- CHECK THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL OUTPUT
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove the Starter Relay.CAUTION:
Removal of the Starter Relay will prevent the vehicle from being started in gear.
WARNING:The Starter Relay must be removed. Failure to do so can result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Install Transmission Simulator (special tool #8333B, Simulator, Transmission).
- Turn the ignition on.
Does the Transmission Simulator (special tool #8333B, Simulator, Transmission) turn on?
Yes
- Go To 9
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE (T15) TRANSMISSION CONTROL AND PDC
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.
- Important: The GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor can add up to 1.5 Ohms of resistance to the circuit.
- Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic) to the appropriate PCM harness connector.
- Using a fused jumper wire or 12-volt test light connected to 12-volts, jumper the (T15) Transmission Control circuit on the appropriate terminal of the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to actuate the internal Transmission relay in the PDC.
- Turn the ignition on.
Does the Transmission Simulator (special tool #8333B, Simulator, Transmission) turn on?
Yes
- Check the (T15) Transmission Control circuit connection at the PCM C1 connector. If no trouble is found, Go To 5.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.
- Important: The GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor can add up to 1.5 Ohms of resistance to the circuit.
- Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic) to the appropriate PCM harness connector.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL, (PCM) 5.7L / 6.4L, REMOVAL or MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL, (PCM) 6.7L DIESEL, REMOVAL .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- Test complete.
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- VERIFY PDC OPERATION
- Using a fused jumper wire or 12-volt test light connected to 12 volts, momentarily jumper the (T15) Transmission Control circuit on the appropriate terminal of the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor several times to actuate the internal transmission relay in the PDC.
Can the PDC be heard clicking when the jumping the (T15) Transmission Control circuit?
Yes
- Go To 11
No
- Go To 7
- Using a fused jumper wire or 12-volt test light connected to 12 volts, momentarily jumper the (T15) Transmission Control circuit on the appropriate terminal of the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor several times to actuate the internal transmission relay in the PDC.
- CHECK THE (T15) TRANSMISSION CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect the PDC C3 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (T15) Transmission Control circuit between the PDC C3 harness connector and the the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 8
No
- Repair the (T15) Transmission Control circuit for an open.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PDC harness connectors.
- Disconnect the related PCM harness connectors.CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

- With the scan tool, read PCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in accordance with the Service information.
(Refer to CENTER, POWER DISTRIBUTION (PDC) )
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- Test complete.
- Replace the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in accordance with the Service information.
- CHECK THE (T16) TRANSMISSION CONTROL OUTPUT CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE PDC AND PCM
- Using a fused jumper wire connected to 12 volts, jumper the (T15) Transmission Control circuit at the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to actuate the internal transmission relay in the PDC.
- Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, check all the (T16) Transmission Control Output circuits at the appropriate terminals of the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor.NOTE:
The (T16) Transmission Control Output circuit branches off to both the Transmission Solenoid/TRS Assembly and PCM.
NOTE:The test light must illuminate brightly. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.
Does the test light illuminate brightly for all (T16) Transmission Control Output circuits?
Yes
- Go To 10
No
- Repair the (T16) Transmission Control circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.
- Important: The GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor can add up to 1.5 Ohms of resistance to the circuit.
- Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic) to the appropriate PCM harness connector.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.

Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL, (PCM) 5.7L / 6.4L, REMOVAL or MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL, (PCM) 6.7L DIESEL, REMOVAL .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- Test complete.
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- CHECK THE (T16) TRANSMISSION CONTROL OUTPUT CIRCUIT
- Disconnect the Transmission Simulator (special tool #8333B, Simulator, Transmission).
- Disconnect the PDC C3 harness connector.NOTE:
The (T16) Transmission Control Output circuit branches off to both the Transmission Solenoid/TRS Assembly and PCM.
- Measure the resistance of the (T16) Transmission Control Output circuit between the PDC C3 harness connector, the Transmission Solenoid/TRS Assembly, and the appropriate terminals at the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms for each measurement?
Yes
- Go To 12
No
- Repair the (T16) Transmission Control circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PDC harness connectors.
- Disconnect the related PCM harness connectors.CAUTION:

- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- Test complete.
- CHECK WIRING AND CONNECTORS FOR INTERMITTENT CONNECTIONS
- The conditions necessary to set this DTC are not present at this time.
- Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors specific to this circuit.
- Wiggle the wires while checking for shorted and open circuits.
- With the scan tool, check the Event Data to help identify the conditions in which the DTC set.
Where any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 66RFE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Test complete.
