Gear, Independent Front Suspension: Installation: Installation

NOTE:
In the frame there are two holes for the mounting of the steering gear, one is slotted and one is round. When tightening the gear to specifications make sure to tighten the mounting bolt with the round hole first to avoid movement of the steering gear.

4wd model shown. 2wd model similar.
- Position the rack and pinion to the front crossmember.
- Install the two steering gear mounting bolts (1) and tighten to the proper SPECIFICATIONS .
- Slide the shaft coupler onto the gear and install a New steering column to steering gear pinch bolt. Tighten the pinch bolt to the proper SPECIFICATIONS .
- Clean and dry the tie rod end studs and the tapers in the knuckles.
- Install the tie rod ends into the steering knuckles. Refer to END, TIE ROD, INSTALLATION . Tighten the tie rod end knuckle nut to the proper SPECIFICATIONS .
- If equipped, install the front skid plate. Refer to PLATE, SKID, FRONT, INSTALLATION .
- Connect electrical connector (1) at EPS.
- Install the front tires and wheels. Refer to WHEELS, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), connect the IBS connector.
- Clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes:
- Insert the key into the ignition and turn to the RUN position.
- Wait eight seconds then rotate the ignition to OFF.
- To complete the calibration, turn the key to the RUN position and scan for trouble codes.
- If only DTC U0131 (Lost Communication with Power Steering Control Module) is present, clear the vehicle DTCs.
- If any other DTCs are present, follow the standard trouble shooting procedure for the specific codes. Do not clear the DTCs unless directed to do so by the trouble shooting procedure.
- If no DTCs are present, continue with the installation procedure.
- Rotate the ignition to OFF.
- Adjust the toe alignment. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
