Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 RAM 3500 HD and 2019 RAM 2500 HD. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. CHECK FOR ACTIVE DTC 
    NOTE:

    Check the coolant level. Only run this Diagnostic Tree if the coolant level is NOT actually low.

    1. Ignition on, engine not running.
    2. Record freeze frame data and clear DTCs.
    3. Turn the ignition off for 75 seconds.
    4. Start the engine and let idle for at least two minutes.
    5. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC reset?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. CHECK THE COOLANT LEVEL (G181) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance between ground and the Coolant Level (G181) Signal circuit at the Coolant Level sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Repair the Coolant Level (G181) Signal circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK FOR THE COOLANT LEVEL (G181) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE (V937) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT 
    1. Measure the Resistance between the Coolant Level (G181) Signal circuit and the (V937) Sensor Ground circuit at the Coolant Level sensor harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 10k Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short between the Coolant Level (G181) Signal circuit and the (V937) Sensor Ground circuit.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE COOLANT LEVEL (G181) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Measure the resistance of the Coolant Level (G181) Signal circuit between the Coolant Level Signal harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Repair the Coolant Level (G181) Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK THE (V937) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Measure the resistance of the (V937) Sensor Ground circuit between the Coolant Level Signal harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Coolant Level sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Repair the Coolant Level (G181) Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  6. REPLACE THE COOLANT LEVEL SENSOR AND RETEST FOR DTCS 
    1. Replace the Coolant Level Sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
    2. Connect the component and Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connectors.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    5. Using the previously recorded [Vehicle Scan / Freeze Frame / Environmental Data] and the When Monitored conditions, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    6. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

    Did the DTC return as Active or Pending?

    Yes 

    No
