REMOVAL

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbags, airbag curtains, knee blocker, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS)/negative battery cable assembly from the negative battery post, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury when removing a deployed airbag, rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the airbag unit and other interior surfaces. In large doses, these deposits may cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury, use extreme care to prevent any foreign material from entering the side curtain airbag, or becoming entrapped between the side curtain airbag cushion and the headliner. Failure to observe this warning could result in occupant injuries upon airbag deployment.

NOTE:

The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged side curtain airbag, also known as Side AirBag Inflatable Curtain (SABIC). If the airbag is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, review the recommended procedures for Handling Non-Deployed Supplemental Restraints. Refer to HANDLING NON-DEPLOYED SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINTS . If the side curtain airbag has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. Refer to SERVICE AFTER A SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT .

Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT . Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before continuing service.
NOTE:
Use the headliner removal procedure to lower the headliner from the inner roof panel. The headliner will NOT be removed from the vehicle interior.
Lower the headliner from the inner roof panel and allow it to rest within the vehicle interior. Refer to HEADLINER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

Disconnect the SABIC wire harness connector (1) from the SABIC inflator (2) above the rear door opening.

NOTE:
Mega cab and Crew cab similar in design. Mounting screws may differ in the amount of screws securing the SABIC to the roof. The SABIC will have push pin retainers at several positions along the roof rails that are part of the SABIC. Take caution when removing the retainers in order to prevent damage to the SABIC.
Remove the six fasteners (1) that secure the SABIC (2) to the inner roof rail above the front, rear door openings, and rear of the inner roof rail.
Disengage the front tether from the retaining clip on the inner A-pillar.
Remove the SABIC from the vehicle as a unit.
NOTE:
If the SABIC has been deployed, the B-pillar and C-pillar deploy brackets must also be inspected. For a list of all components that must be inspected or replaced after an airbag deployment. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

INSTALLATION

Position the SABIC to the vehicle as a unit. Be certain that the SABIC is not twisted.
Engage the front tether with retaining clip on the inner A-pillar.
Install the eight screws that secure the SABIC to the inner roof rail above the front, rear door openings, and the rear tether to the rear of the inner roof rail. Tighten the side curtain airbag screws to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
NOTE:
Quad cab and Crew cab are similar in design. The number of screws used may differ for securing the SABIC to the roof. The SABIC will have push-pin retainers at several positions along the roof rails that are part of the SABIC. Take caution when installing the retainers in order to prevent damage to the SABIC.
Connect the SABIC wire harness connector.
Push the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) lock firmly toward the SAB connector insulator until it is flush with the upper surface of the insulator.
Install the headliner to the vehicle. Refer to HEADLINER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
Do not connect the negative battery cable at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component. Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
