Adaptive Front Lighting System

Vehicles equipped with the optional AFLS are also equipped with an AFLS module. The AFLS module is located within the left headlamp and is serviced with the headlamp. The AFLS performs the Dynamic Bending Light (DBL) feature of the AFLS.

The DBL feature consists of a horizontally swivelling low beam. The swivelling depends on various parameters relating to vehicle dynamics. The DBL function is activated and deactivated by means of a soft control button in the radio or electronic vehicle information center (EVIC). the DBL function is active if the following conditions are met:

If any of the above conditions are not satisfied the DBL function will not become active.

The AFLS unit reads the following signals over the CAN-C bus to perform DBL:

The AFLS unit calculates a setpoint for the swivel angle of each headlamp by means of a speed-dependent algorithm. Reduction of vehicle speed to zero will cause the headlamps to continuously swivel towards the center or zero position. The AFLS unit provides position commands for the DBL stepper motors of both the left and the right headlamp by sending proprietary LIN messages to the left and right headlamp units. Upon reception of the proprietary LIN commands the headlamp units actuate the left and right DBL stepper motors, respectively. If the vehicle is in reverse gear the headlamp swivelling angle shall be set to 0°.

If the AFLS module determines the DBL stepper motors are not successfully initialized the DBL functions shall be disabled and set to the neutral position until the next ignition cycle.

The AFLS module receives battery voltage on a fused ignition switch output (RUN) circuit, and is grounded at all times through a hard wired remote ground point. These connections allow the AFLS module to operate only when the ignition switch is in the ON position. The AFLS module also monitors all of the AFLS circuits and components, then sets active and stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) for any monitored system faults it detects.

The AFLS module is flash programmable.
