Diagnostic Test
- VERIFY THAT DTC B1B57-1ST ROW PASSENGER SEAT BELT SENSOR CIRCUIT SHORTED TOGETHER IS ACTIVE NOTE: Ensure the battery is fully charged.
- CHECK FOR HIGH VOLTAGE ON THE PASSENGER HALL EFFECT CIRCUITS
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Passenger Seat Belt Switch connector.NOTE: Check connectors - Clean and repair as necessary.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage between the (R274) Passenger Hall Effect (+) circuit cavity 1 in the Passenger Seat Belt Connector and ground.
- Measure the voltage between the (R272) Passenger Hall Effect (-) circuit between cavity 2 in the Passenger Seat Belt Connector and ground.
Is the voltage above 5 volts on either circuit?
Yes
- Go to step 5
No
- Go to step 3
- CHECK FOR A ORC PASSENGER HALL EFFECT CIRCUITS SHORTED TOGETHER
- Turn the ignition off.
- Measure the resistance between the (R272) Passenger Hall Effect (-) circuit cavity 1 and (R274) Passenger Hall Effect (+) circuit cavity 2 in the Passenger Seat Belt Switch connector.
Is the resistance below 10.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go to step 4
No
- Replace the shorted Passenger Seat Belt Switch in accordance with the service information.
- Perform the AIRBAG SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Standard Procedure .
- CHECK FOR PASSENGER HALL EFFECT CIRCUITS SHORTED TOGETHER
WARNING: Turn the ignition off disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Disconnect the both ORC connectors.NOTE: Check connectors - Clean and repair as necessary.
- Connect the 8443-24 Load Tool Adaptor to the ORC C1 connector.
- Measure the resistance between the (R274) Passenger Hall Effect (+) circuit and (R272) Passenger Hall Effect (-) circuit in the Passenger Seat Belt Connector.
Is the resistance below 5.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Repair the open Passenger Hall Effect (-) circuit.
- Perform the AIRBAG SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Standard Procedure .
No
- Replace the ORC in accordance with the service information.
- Perform the ORC VERIFICATION TEST. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Standard Procedure .
WARNING: If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Disconnect the both ORC connectors.
- CHECK FOR A PASSENGER HALL EFFECT CIRCUITS SHORTED HIGH
WARNING: Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Disconnect the both ORC connectors.NOTE: Check connectors - Clean and repair as necessary.
- Connect the 8443-24 ORC Adaptor to the ORC C1 connector.
- Measure the voltage of the (R274) Passenger Hall Effect (+) circuit from cavity 1 of the Passenger Seat Belt Connector to ground.
- Measure the voltage of the (R272) Passenger Hall Effect (-) circuit from cavity 2 of the Passenger Seat Belt Connector to ground.
Is there any voltage on either circuit?
Repair
- Repair the shorted to battery (R274) Passenger Hall Effect (+) circuit or (R272) Passenger Hall Effect (-) circuit in accordance with the service information.
- Perform the AIRBAG SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Standard Procedure .
No
- Replace the ORC in accordance with the service information.
- Perform the ORC VERIFICATION TEST. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Standard Procedure
WARNING: If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Disconnect the both ORC connectors.
- TEST FOR INTERMITTENT CONDITION
- With the scan tool, record and erase all DTCs from all Airbag modules.
- If any ACTIVE codes are present they must be resolved before diagnosing any stored codes.WARNING: Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Using the SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors.
- Look for chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires and broken, bent, pushed out, spread, corroded, or contaminated terminals.
- The following additional checks may assist you in identifying a possible intermittent problem.
- Reconnect any disconnected components and harness connector.WARNING: Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery. Wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- With the scan tool, monitor active codes as you work through the following steps.WARNING: Maintain a safe distance from all airbags while performing the following steps. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Wiggle the wiring harness and connectors of the related airbag circuit or component.
- If only stored codes return, continue the test until the problem area has been isolated.
- In the previous steps you have attempted to recreate the conditions responsible for setting the active DTC in question.
Does the scan tool display any ACTIVE DTCs?
Yes
- Select the appropriate diagnostic procedure from the DIAGNOSTIC CODE INDEX . See DTC-Based Diagnostics/CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Diagnosis and Testing .
No
- No problem found at this time. Erase all codes before returning vehicle to customer.
