Inner Tie Rod

INNER TIE ROD

1. Remove the outer tie rod end. Tie Rod End - Removal
2. Remove the tie rod jam nut from the inner tie rod.




3. Remove the clamp (4) securing the bellows (1) to the inner tie rod.
4. Remove the clamp (3) securing the bellows (1) to the transfer tube.
5. Remove the clamp (2) securing the bellows (1) to the steering gear body.
6. Remove the bellows.

CAUTION: If the inner tie rod cannot be removed using the specified tools, do not use a hammer or heat to loosen. Damage to the steering gear will occur. Replace the entire steering gear.






NOTE: Before installing Socket (1), Special Tool 10087-5, make sure any grease is removed from the outside housing of the inner tie rod ball and socket to avoid excessive grease buildup inside Socket 10087-5.

7. Slide Socket (1), Special Tool 10087-5, or equivalent inner tie rod tool, over inner tie rod (2) and onto inner tie rod ball and socket.





8. Install Wrench (2), Special Tool 10087-2, over the inner tie rod and onto Socket (1) 10087-5.
9. Using a ratchet in the square drive on the rear of Wrench 10087-2, unthread and remove the inner tie rod from the steering gear.





10. Make sure the travel restrictor (1) is removed along with the inner tie rod.
