Gearshift Cable - Column Mount

Check adjustment by starting the engine in PARK and NEUTRAL. Adjustment is CORRECT if the engine starts only in these positions. Adjustment is INCORRECT if the engine starts in one but not both positions. If the engine starts in any position other than PARK or NEUTRAL, or if the engine will not start at all, the park/neutral position contact may be faulty.

  1. If necessary, remove the instrument panel side trim at the end of the instrument panel.
  2. If necessary, remove the knee bolster fasteners.
  3. If necessary, disconnect the trunk release harness connector to the trunk release switch on the knee bolster, and remove the knee bolster.

  4. If necessary, remove the screws (3), and remove the instrument panel steering column cover reinforcement (1).

  5. If necessary, remove the silencer panel fasteners, and remove the silencer panel (1).
  6. Shift transmission into PARK.

  7. Loosen the shift cable adjustment screw (1).
  8. Raise vehicle.
  9. Unsnap cable eyelet from transmission shift lever.
  10. Verify transmission shift lever is in PARK detent by moving lever fully rearward. Last rearward detent is PARK position.
  11. Verify positive engagement of transmission park lock by attempting to rotate propeller shaft. Shaft will not rotate when park lock is engaged.
  12. Snap cable eyelet onto transmission shift lever.
  13. Lower vehicle
  14. Tighten the shift cable adjustment screw (1) to 7 N.m (65 in.lbs.).
  15. Verify correct operation of the shifter.

  16. If removed, install the silencer panel (1), and the silencer panel fasteners.

  17. If removed, install the instrument panel steering column cover reinforcement (1), and the screws (3).
  18. If removed, reconnect the trunk release harness connector to the trunk release switch on the knee bolster, and install the knee bolster.
  19. If removed, install the knee bolster fasteners.
  20. If removed, install the instrument panel side trim at the end of the instrument panel.
