Section 81 (Rack & Pinion Power Steering System): Pump: Removal: 2.4L

NOTE: Before proceeding, (Refer to STEERING - WARNING) .

Siphon as much fluid as possible from the power steering fluid reservoir.
Raise and support the vehicle. (Refer to LUBRICATION & MAINTENANCE/HOISTING - STANDARD PROCEDURE) .

Remove the wheel mounting nuts (3), then the right front tire and wheel assembly (1).

Remove the one fastener (2) securing the wheel house splash shield (1) to the drive belt splash shield (3).

NOTE: Depending on application, it may be necessary to remove some fasteners securing the front fascia (1) to the body lower reinforcement in order to access drive belt splash shield forward fastener.
Remove the fastener (5) securing the drive belt splash shield (3) to the front suspension crossmember (6).
Remove the fasteners (4) securing the splash shield (3) to the body (2).
Remove the drive belt splash shield (3).
Remove the accessory drive-belt from the A/C compressor and power steering pump. (Refer to COOLING/ACCESSORY DRIVE/DRIVE BELTS - REMOVAL) .

1 - COMPRESSOR
Disconnect the wiring connectors from the A/C compressor (1).

Remove the four bolts fastening the A/C compressor (1) to the engine, then move the compressor toward the center of the vehicle, allowing the compressor to settle in place.

3 - PRESSURE HOSE TUBE NUT

From below, place a crowfoot wrench on a long extension onto the pressure hose tube nut (3) at the pump.
Place a shop towel between the crowfoot and the pump pulley (1) to avoid slipping and possibly damaging the pulley.

1 - PUMP

2 - PRESSURE HOSE
Unthread the tube nut and lower the pressure hose out of the pump (1).
Lower the vehicle.

1 - GRILLE

2 - RETAINER
Remove the grille (1) from the front of the vehicle. (Refer to BODY/EXTERIOR/GRILLE - REMOVAL) .
Remove the hood-opening weather-strip from across the radiator closure panel.

1 - FASTENER

2 - SENSOR
Remove the fastener (1), then the ambient temperature sensor (2) from the radiator closure panel.

1 - FASTENERS
Remove the fasteners (1) securing the upper radiator closure panel in place, then remove the panel.
Lift the cooling module out of its lower mounts and carefully move it toward the left side of the vehicle. It will move only a limited amount with the hoses still connected. Do not force it.
NOTE: For additional room, the right side bolts securing the lower radiator closure panel in front of the cooling module can be removed.

1 - COOLING MODULE
Using a bungee cord, tie the cooling module (1) forward as shown. Be sure to attach the cord in a location that will not damage the vehicle. Do not overtighten the bungee cord. It just needs to hold the module forward.

1 - SUPPLY HOSE CLAMP

2 - POWER STEERING PUMP
Remove the clamp (1) securing the supply hose to the power steering pump (2) supply fitting, then remove the hose from the supply fitting.

2 - SUPPORT
Remove the three bolts securing the pump (1) in place.
Remove the 2 bolts securing the stamped steel support bracket (2) to the engine block. Remove the bracket.

Ease the cooling module forward, DON'T FORCE IT , and remove the power steering pump with pulley where shown.
If the pulley needs removal, (Refer to STEERING/PUMP/PULLEY - REMOVAL) .
