Shoe And Linings-Parking Brake: Installation

NOTE:
If replacing parking brake shoes on both sides of vehicle, perform step 1. through step 13. on each side of the vehicle to complete shoe set installation, then proceed to step 14.
- Install the front brake shoe (1) on the adapter. Insert the hold-down pin (3) (from the rear) through the shoe and install the hold-down clip (2) securing the shoe in place. Position the clip as shown in illustration to avoid contact with other components.
- Attach the upper shoe return spring (1) on the two shoes. Pull the rear brake shoe (2) over the anchor block until it is properly located on the adapter. Make sure the parking brake actuator lever is properly installed between the front and rear shoes.
- Install the lower return spring (2) on the shoes.
- Install the brake shoe adjuster (1) between the front and rear shoes (2). The star wheel mounts toward the rear of the vehicle.
- Insert the hold-down pin (3) (from the rear) through the rear shoe (1) and install the hold-down clip (2) securing the shoe in place. Position the clip as shown in illustration to avoid contact with other components.
1 - REAR PARKING BRAKE SHOES 2 - BRAKE SHOE GAUGE - Using a brake shoe gauge (2), adjust the parking brake shoes (1) to a diameter of 171 mm (6.75 inch).
- Slide the hub and bearing (2) onto the rear spindle (6).
- Install a NEW hub and bearing retaining nut (11). Tighten the hub nut to 217 N.m (160 ft. lbs.).
- Install the hub and bearing dust cap (10).
- Install the brake rotor (8).
- Install the disc brake caliper (1) over the rotor (2) and onto the brake adapter (4, then 3) as indicated.
- Install the two caliper guide pin bolts (4) securing the caliper (1). Tighten the bolts to 22 N.m (192 in. lbs.).
- Install tire and wheel assembly (1) (Refer to TIRES/WHEELS - INSTALLATION) . Install and tighten wheel mounting nuts (3) to 135 N.m (100 ft. lbs.).
- Adjust the parking brake shoes as necessary. (Refer to BRAKES/PARKING BRAKE/SHOES - ADJUSTMENTS)
- Lower the vehicle.
