Rear Disc Brake Vehicles

NOTE: The following procedure applies to either of the two rear parking brake cables.
  1. From underneath, push the parking brake cable through the hole in the floor pan of the vehicle making sure the cable sealing grommet is installed in the floor pan as far as possible (without going all the way through) to ensure a good seal.

  2. Guide the trailing end of the cable (1) through the hole in the axle trailing arm (2).
  3. Align the cable routing brackets with their mounts on the trailing arm and insert the studs. Install the two fasteners (3) securing the cable and routing brackets to the trailing arm (2). Tighten the mounting bolts to 14 N.m (125 in. lbs.).
  4. Install the parking brake cable into the rear disc brake adapter. Be sure the locking fingers on the cable retainer are expanded once the cable is pushed all the way into the brake adapter hole to ensure the cable is securely held in place.

  5. Install the shoe actuator lever (1) on the parking brake cable (3).

  6. Install the parking brake shoe assembly (includes shoes, lower spring and adjuster) over the shoe actuator lever and anchor, onto the disc brake adapter (5) using the hold-down pins and clips (2).
  7. Install the upper return spring (1).

  8. Slide the hub and bearing (2) onto the rear spindle (6).
  9. Install a NEW hub and bearing retaining nut (11). Tighten the hub nut to 217 N.m (160 ft. lbs.).
  10. Install the hub and bearing dust cap (10).
  11. Install the brake rotor (8).
  12. Install the disc brake caliper (1). Install the two caliper guide pin bolts. Tighten the bolts to 22 N.m (192 in. lbs.).

  13. Install tire and wheel assembly (1) (Refer to TIRES/WHEELS - INSTALLATION) . Install and tighten wheel mounting nuts (3) to 135 N.m (100 ft. lbs.).
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Ensure that the seal grommet on the cable that was installed from underneath is fully seated into the floor pan.
    WARNING: The automatic adjusting feature of this parking brake lever contains a clockspring loaded to approximately 19 pounds. Do not release the automatic adjuster lockout device unless the rear parking brake cables and equalizer are connected to the lever output cable. Keep hands out of automatic adjuster sector and pawl area. Failure to observe caution in handling this mechanism could lead to serious injury.

  16. Route the parking brake cable under the carpeting, up to the parking brake cable retaining bracket on the floor pan. Insert the parking brake cable through the retaining bracket. Push the cable in until the locking fingers on the cable retainer lock the cable into place.
  17. Install the rear parking brake cables (3) into the equalizer (2) on the parking brake lever output cable (1).
  18. Ensure that the parking brake cables are correctly installed on the equalizer and aligned with the cable track on the parking brake lever.

  19. Raise parking brake lever (1) to full upright (applied) position.
  20. Keeping hands clear of the automatic adjuster sector and pawl area, firmly grasp the pin punch (3) (drill bit or locking pin) installed in the parking brake lever (1), then quickly remove it from the lever mechanism. This will allow the parking brake lever mechanism to automatically adjust the parking brake cables.
  21. Cycle the parking brake lever once to position the parking brake cables, then fully apply the parking brake.
  22. Raise the vehicle to a point where the rear wheels just clear the floor. Check the rear wheels of the vehicle. They should not rotate with the lever in its full upright (applied) position.
  23. Return the parking brake lever to its released position.
  24. Check the rear wheels of the vehicle. They should rotate freely without dragging with the lever in its released position.
  25. Apply the parking brake.
  26. Lower the vehicle.

  27. Install the center console and rear window switch panel. Refer to CENTER CONSOLE .
  28. Remove the blocks from the tires and wheels.

  29. Connect the battery negative cable (1) to its post on the battery (4).

  30. If applicable to access battery negative terminal, install the air cleaner cover.
  31. On vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes:
    1. Install the parking brake cable on the parking brake cable actuating lever.
    2. Install the actuating spring to the brake shoe and the brake adjustment lever.
  32. On drum brake equipped vehicles, install the rear brake drum.
