Left Cylinder Head

- Perform the fuel relief procedure.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Drain cooling system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the upper intake manifold.
- Remove the lower intake manifold. See REMOVAL .
- Remove the accessory drive belt (6). See Fig 1.
- Remove the belt tensioner (1). See Fig 1.
- Remove the accessory drive idler pulley. See Fig 1.
- Remove the power steering mounting bolts and set pump (2) aside. See Fig 1.
- Remove the crankshaft damper (4). See Fig 1. See REMOVAL .
- Remove the lower outer timing belt cover. See Fig 1.
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Remove the front exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold mounting nuts (2). See Fig 2.
- Disconnect both oxygen sensor harness connectors (1, 2). See Fig 2.
1 - RIGHT CAMSHAFT GEAR ALIGNMENT MARK 7 - LEFT CAMSHAFT GEAR 2 - RIGHT CAMSHAFT GEAR 8 - LEFT CAMSHAFT GEAR ALIGNMENT MARK 3 - CYLINDER HEAD TO INNER TIMING BELT COVER BOLTS - RIGHT 9 - CRANKSHAFT GEAR ALIGNMENT MARK 4 - TIMING BELT 10 - CRANKSHAFT GEAR 5 - WATER PUMP PULLEY 11 - TIMING BELT TENSIONER PULLEY 6 - CYLINDER HEAD TO INNER TIMING BELT COVER BOLTS - LEFT 12 - TIMING BELT TENSIONER - Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the outer timing belt cover. See REMOVAL .
- Rotate the engine to TDC and align the timing marks (1, 8, 9). See Fig 3.
- Remove the timing belt tensioner (12), timing belt (4), then reset tensioner. See REMOVAL .
- Remove the left cylinder head cover to cylinder head ground strap (3). See Fig 4.
- Remove the left cylinder head cover.
1 - SPARK PLUG TUBE 2 - ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLY 3 - CAMSHAFT 4 - SEAL - Remove the left rocker arm assembly (2). See Fig 5.
1 - CAMSHAFT THRUST PLATE 2 - BOLT 3 - O-RING - Remove the left camshaft thrust plate (1).
1 - LEFT CAMSHAFT TDC 2 - LOOSENED ROCKER ASSEMBLY - Counterhold the left cam gear and remove the cam gear retaining bolt. See Fig 7. See REMOVAL .
- Push the camshaft out of the back of the cylinder head approximately 3.5 inches and remove the cam gear.
Remove the front timing belt housing to cylinder head bolts.
- Remove the cylinder head bolts in REVERSE of tightening sequence. See Fig 8.
- Remove the cylinder head.
- Clean and inspect all mating surfaces.
