Inner Tie Rod

CAUTION: When installing the travel restrictor, be sure to use the same color and thickness travel restrictor as was removed. This action is necessary to properly set gear travel for the steering gear being serviced. Travel restrictor thickness can vary side-to-side on the vehicle.

Install the travel restrictor (1), flat side of teeth (2) facing out, on the inboard end of the inner tie rod ball joint.
Apply Mopar® Lock & Seal Adhesive or equivalent medium thread locker adhesive to the inboard end threads of the inner tie rod.

Thread the inner tie rod (1) (with restrictor (3)) into the steering gear (2).

NOTE: Before installing Socket (1), Special Tool 10087-5, be sure to clear any grease from inside the Socket.
Slide Socket (1), Special Tool 10087-5 or equivalent inner tie rod tool, over the inner tie rod (2) and onto the inner tie rod ball and socket.

Install Wrench (2), Special Tool 10087-2, over the inner tie rod and onto Socket (1) 10087-5.
Utilizing the square drive on the rear of Wrench 10087-2, tighten the inner tie rod to 78 N.m, (58 ft. lbs.).
Place a NEW transfer tube clamp over the transfer tube past where bellows will mount.
Loosely place a NEW clamp over the large end of the NEW bellows.
Slide the NEW bellows with clamp over the end of the inner tie rod and onto the gear body and transfer tube.

Push the small end of the bellows (2) past the groove (1) machined into the inner tie rod.
Apply a small amount of Mopar® Lubriplate or equivalent uniformly to the groove (1) in the inner tie rod shaft. This allows for toe adjustment without twisting the bellows.
Pull the small end of the bellows outward until the ridge inside the bellows engages the groove.

Install a NEW clamp (4) over the small end of the bellows (1).
Install the clamp (3) securing the bellows to the transfer tube.

Using crimping pliers (1), crimp the large clamp (2) securing the bellows to the gear body.
Thread the tie rod jam nut onto the inner tie rod far enough to install the outer tie rod end.
Install the outer tie rod end. See INSTALLATION .
