Diagnosis And Testing - Cylinder Head Gasket Failure: Notes

A cylinder head gasket leak can be located between adjacent cylinders or between a cylinder and the adjacent water jacket.

  1. Possible indications of the cylinder head gasket leaking between adjacent cylinders are:
    1. Loss of engine power
    2. Engine misfiring
    3. Poor fuel economy
  2. Possible indications of the cylinder head gasket leaking between a cylinder and an adjacent water jacket are:
    1. Engine overheating
    2. Loss of coolant
    3. Excessive steam (white smoke) emitting from exhaust
    4. Coolant foaming
