Disassembly - Wheel Bearing And Hub

NOTE: The removal and installation of the wheel bearing and hub from the steering knuckle is only to be done with the knuckle removed from the vehicle. (Refer to SUSPENSION/FRONT/KNUCKLE - REMOVAL) .

NOTE: Three wheel mounting studs across from one another require removal from the hub flange. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each stud before going on to step 3.
  1. Using Press (1), Special Tool C-4150A, one at a time, press of one of three wheel mounting studs (2) (across from one another) out of the hub flange (3).

  2. Rotate the hub to align the loosened wheel mounting stud(s) with the notch (2) in the bearing retainer plate (1). Remove the stud through the open notch.

  3. Rotate the hub so the empty stud mounting holes in the hub are facing in the direction shown in the figure in relationship to the knuckle (1). Absence of the three wheel mounting studs and positioning the hub in this direction allows the bearing splitter to be installed behind the flange in the next step.
  4. Install the Bearing Splitter (2), Special Tool 1130, between the hub and the bearing retainer plate as shown. Hand tighten the nuts to hold bearing splitter in place on knuckle.

  5. Place the steering knuckle face down in an arbor press supported by the bearing splitter (4) as shown. The press support blocks must not obstruct the wheel hub while it is being pressed out of the knuckle.
  6. Position Remover/Installer, Special Tool 6644-2 (2), on the small end of the hub (3). Lower the arbor press ram (1) and remove the hub from the wheel bearing and knuckle. The bearing race will normally come out of the wheel bearing with the hub as it is pressed out of the bearing.
  7. Remove the bearing splitter from the knuckle.

  8. Remove the three bolts (2) mounting the bearing retainer plate (3) to the knuckle. Remove the bearing retainer plate from the knuckle.

  9. Place the knuckle back in the arbor press face down as shown. The press support blocks must not obstruct the bearing while it is being pressed out of the steering knuckle.
  10. Place Remover/Installer (2), Special Tool MB-990799, on the outer race of the wheel bearing. Lower the arbor press ram (1) and remove the wheel bearing from the knuckle.

  11. If the bearing race is still pressed onto the hub, install the Bearing Splitter (3), Special Tool 1130, between the hub flange and the bearing race (5).
  12. Place the hub, bearing race and bearing splitter in an arbor press as shown. The press support blocks (4) must not obstruct the wheel hub while it is being pressed out of the bearing race.
  13. Place Remover/Installer (6), Special Tool 6644-2, on end of hub (2). Lower the arbor press ram (1) and remove the hub from the bearing race.
NOTE: For steering knuckle reassembly, (Refer to SUSPENSION/FRONT/KNUCKLE - ASSEMBLY) .
