Diagnostic Test

  1. 1)  VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR OPERATION 

    Raise the drive wheels off the ground.

    WARNING: Be sure to keep hands and feet clear of rotating wheels.

    Start the engine.

    If any MAP Sensor or TP Sensor faults are set, they must be diagnosed before continuing with the P0500 diagnostics.

    With the scan tool, monitor the Vehicle Speed Sensor

    Place the transmission in any forward gear.

    Allow the wheels to rotate.

    Does the scan tool display vehicle speed above 0 MPH/KMH? 

    Yes 

    1. Refer to the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Go To  2).
  2. 2)  (K875) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORT TO B+

    Turn the ignition off.

    Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor harness connector.

    Turn the ignition on.

    Measure the voltage of the (K875) 5-volt Supply circuit in the VSS harness connector.

    Is the voltage above 5.0 volts? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  3).

    No 

    1. Repair the open or short to ground in the (K875) 5-volt Supply circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .
  3. 3)  (K75) VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL

    Measure the voltage of the (K75) Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal circuit in the VSS harness connector.

    Is the voltage between 4.5 to 5.0 volts? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  4).

    No 

    1. Go To  5).
  4. 4)  (K975) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND

    Measure the resistance of the (K975) Sensor ground circuit between the VSS harness connector and ground.

    Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Remove and inspect the Speedometer Pinion Gear. If OK, replace the Vehicle Speed Sensor.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Repair the open in the (K975) Sensor ground circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .
  5. 5)  (K75) VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND

    Disconnect the PCM harness connector.

    Measure the resistance of the (K75) Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal circuit in the VSS harness connector to ground.

    Is the resistance below 100 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Repair the short to ground in the (K75) Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Go To  6).
  6. 6)  (K75) VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN

    Measure the resistance of the (K75) Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal circuit between the VSS harness connector and the PCM harness connector.

    Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  7).

    No 

    1. Repair the open in the (K75) Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .
  7. 7)  PCM 
    NOTE: Before Continuing: Disconnect the PCM harness connector and check the related wiring terminals for corrosion, damage or terminal push out. Repair as necessary.

    Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wire harness and connectors. Pay particular attention to all Power and Ground circuits.

    If there are no possible causes remaining, view repair, 

    Repair 

    1. Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the Service Information. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - PCM/ECM/SKREEM PROGRAMMING) .
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .
