Diagnostic Test

  1. 1)  GOOD TRIP INDICATED 

    With the scan tool, read DTCs.

    Does the Good Trip Indicator display YES? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  2).

    No 

    1. Go To  3).
  2. 2)  CHECKING INTERMITTENT CMP SIGNAL WITH LAB SCOPE 
    NOTE: At this time the conditions that set the DTC are not present at this time. The following tests may help in identifying the intermittent condition.

    Turn the ignition off.

    With a lab scope, and the Miller special tool #6801, backprobe the CMP Signal circuit in the PCM harness connector and the CMP Sensor harness connector.

    Wiggle the related wiring harness and connections.

    Look for any pulses generated by the CMP while wiggling the harness and connectors.

    WARNING: When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts, or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury or death.

    Start the engine.

    Observe the lab scope screen.

    Wiggle the related wiring harness and connections.

    Look for any pulses generated by the CMP Sensor.

    Did the CMP Sensor generate any pulses in either of the above tests? 

    Yes 

    1. Check the wiring and connections that may cause the intermittent condition, if OK, replace the Cam Position Sensor.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Test Complete.

    Turn the ignition off.

    Disconnect the CMP Sensor harness connector.

    Turn the ignition on, engine off.

    Measure the voltage of the (K844) 5-volt Supply circuit in the CMP Sensor harness connector.

    Is the voltage between 4.5 and 5.5 volts? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  4).

    No 

    1. Go To  12).
  4. 4)  (K44) CMP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT

    Turn the ignition on.

    Measure the voltage of the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit in the CMP Sensor harness connector.

    Is the voltage between 4.5 and 5.0 volts? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  5).

    No 

    1. Go To  7).

    Turn the ignition off.

    Disconnect the PCM harness connector.

    Measure the resistance of the (K944) Sensor Ground circuit between the CMP Sensor harness connector and the PCM harness connector.

    Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  6).

    No 

    1. Repair the open in the (K944) Sensor Ground circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .
  6. 6)  CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR 
    NOTE: Inspect the Camshaft sprocket for damage per the Service Information. If a problem is found repair as necessary.

    If there are no possible causes remaining, view repair. 

    Repair 

    1. Replace the Camshaft Position Sensor.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    Turn the ignition off.

    Disconnect the PCM harness connector.

    Measure the resistance of the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit in the CMP Sensor harness connector to ground.

    Is the resistance below 100 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Repair the short to ground in the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Go To  8).
  8. 8)  (K44) CMP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN

    Measure the resistance of the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit between the CMP Sensor harness connector and the PCM harness connector.

    Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  9).

    No 

    1. Repair the open in the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    Turn the ignition on.

    Measure the voltage of the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit in the CMP Sensor harness connector.

    Is the voltage above 5.0 volts? 

    Yes 

    1. Repair the short to voltage in the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Go To  10).
  10. 10)  (K44) CMP SENSOR SIGNAL SHORTED TO (K844) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT

    Turn the ignition off.

    Measure the resistance between the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit and the (K844) 5-volt Supply circuit in the CMP Sensor harness connector.

    Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Repair the short to the (K844) 5-volt supply circuit in the (K44) CMP Sensor Signal circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Go To  11).
  11. 11)  PCM - (K44) CMP SENSOR SIGNAL 

    If there are no possible causes remaining, view repair. 

    Repair 

    1. Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the Service Information. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - PCM/ECM/SKREEM PROGRAMMING) .
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    Turn the ignition off.

    Disconnect the PCM harness connector.

    Measure the resistance of the (K844) 5-volt Supply circuit in the CMP Sensor harness connector to ground.

    Is the resistance below 100 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Repair the (K844) 5-volt Supply circuit for a short to ground.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Go To  13).

    Measure the resistance of the (K844) 5-Volt Supply circuit between the CMP Sensor harness connector and the PCM harness connector.

    Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  14).

    No 

    1. Repair the (K844) 5-volt Supply circuit for an open.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    Turn the ignition on.

    Measure the voltage of the (K844) 5-volt Supply circuit in the CMP Sensor harness connector.

    Is the voltage above 5.5 volts? 

    Yes 

    1. Repair the (K844) 5-volt Supply circuit for a short to battery voltage.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Go To  15).
  15. 15)  PCM - (K844) 5-VOLT SUPPLY 
    NOTE: Before Continuing: Disconnect the PCM harness connector and check the related wiring terminals for corrosion, damage or terminal push out. Repair as necessary.

    Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wire harness and connectors. Pay particular attention to all Power and Ground circuits.

    If there are no possible causes remaining, view repair. 

    Repair 

    1. Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the Service Information. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - PCM/ECM/SKREEM PROGRAMMING) .
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .
