Diagnostic Test

  1. 1)  GOOD TRIP INDICATED 

    With the scan tool, read DTCs.

    Does the Good Trip Indicator display YES? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  2).

    No 

    1. Go To  3).
  2. 2)  CHECKING INTERMITTENT CKP SIGNAL WITH LAB 
    NOTE: The conditions that set the DTC are not present at this time. The following tests may help in identifying the intermittent condition.

    Turn the ignition on, engine not running.

    With a lab scope and the Miller special tool #6801, backprobe the CKP Signal circuit in the PCM harness connector.

    Wiggle the related wiring harness and connections.

    Monitor the lab scope screen.

    WARNING: When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts, or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury or death.

    Start the engine.

    Lightly tap on the Crank Sensor and wiggle the CKP Sensor connector.

    Observe the lab scope screen.

    Look for any erratic pulses generated by the CKP Sensor.

    Did the CKP Sensor generate any erratic pulses? 

    Yes 

    1. Carefully inspect the wiring harness and connections, repair as necessary, if OK, replace the Crank Position Sensor.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Test Complete.
  3. 3)  (K853) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT

    Turn the ignition off.

    Disconnect the CKP Sensor harness connector.

    Turn the ignition on.

    Measure the voltage of the (K853) 5-volt Supply circuit in the CKP Sensor harness connector.

    Is the voltage between 4.8 and 5.2 volts? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  4).

    No 

    1. Go To  12).
  4. 4)  (K24) CKP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT

    Measure the voltage of the (K24) CKP Sensor Signal circuit in the CKP Sensor harness connector.

    Is the voltage between 4.5 and 5.0 volts? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  5).

    No 

    1. Go To  7).
  5. 5)  (K925) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT OPEN

    Measure the resistance between ground and the (K925) Sensor Ground circuit at the CKP Sensor harness connector.

    Is the resistance below 10 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  6).

    No 

    1. Repair the open in the (K925) Sensor Ground circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .
  6. 6)  CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR 
    NOTE: Inspect the slots on the crank, tone wheel, for damage. If a problem is found repair as necessary.

    If there are no possible causes remaining, view repair. 

    Repair 

    1. Replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .
  7. 7)  (K24) CKP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND

    Measure the resistance between ground and the (K24) CKP Sensor Signal circuit at the CKP Sensor harness connector.

    Is the resistance below 100 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Repair the short to ground in the (K24) CKP Sensor Signal circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Go To  8).
  8. 8)  (K24) CKP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN

    Disconnect the PCM harness connectors.

    Measure the resistance of the (K24) CKP Sensor Signal circuit from the CKP Sensor harness connector to the PCM harness connector.

    Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  9).

    No 

    1. Repair the open in the (K24) CKP Sensor Signal circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .
  9. 9)  (K24) CKP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE

    Turn the ignition on.

    Measure the voltage of the (K24) CKP Sensor Signal circuit in the CKP Sensor harness connector.

    Is the voltage above 4.7 volts? 

    Yes 

    1. Repair the short to voltage in the (K24) CKP Sensor Signal circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Go To  10).
  10. 10)  (K24) CKP SENSOR SIGNAL SHORTED TO (K853) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT

    Turn the ignition off.

    Measure the resistance between the (K24) CKP Sensor Signal circuit and the (K853) 5-volt Supply circuit in the CKP Sensor harness connector.

    Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Repair the short to (K853) 5-volt Supply circuit in the (K24) CKP Sensor Signal circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Go To  11).
  11. 11)  PCM - (K24) CKP SENSOR SIGNAL 
    NOTE: Before Continuing: Disconnect the PCM harness connector and check the related wiring terminals for corrosion, damage or terminal push out. Repair as necessary.

    Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wire harness and connectors. Pay particular attention to all Power and Ground circuits.

    If there are no possible causes remaining, view repair. 

    Repair 

    1. Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the Service Information. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - PCM/ECM/SKREEM PROGRAMMING) .
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    Turn the ignition off.

    Disconnect the PCM harness connector(s).

    Measure the resistance between ground and the (K853) 5-volt Supply circuit at the CKP Sensor harness connector.

    Is the resistance below 100 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Repair the short to ground in the (K853) 5-volt Supply circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Go To  13).
  13. 13)  (K853) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT OPEN

    Turn the ignition off.

    Disconnect the CKP Sensor harness connector.

    Disconnect the PCM harness connector(s).

    Measure the resistance of the (K853) 5-volt Supply circuit between the CKP Sensor harness connector and the PCM harness connector.

    Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? 

    Yes 

    1. Go To  14).

    No 

    1. Repair the open in the (K853) 5-volt Supply circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    Turn the ignition off.

    Disconnect the CKP Sensor harness connector.

    Turn the ignition on.

    Measure the voltage of the (K853) 5-volt Supply circuit in the CKP Sensor harness connector.

    Is the voltage above 5.0 volts? 

    Yes 

    1. Repair the short to voltage in the (K853) 5 Volt Supply circuit.
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .

    No 

    1. Go To  15).
  15. 15)  PCM - (K853) 5-VOLT SUPPLY 
    NOTE: Before Continuing: Disconnect the PCM harness connector and check the related wiring terminals for corrosion, damage or terminal push out. Repair as necessary.

    Using the schematics as a guide, inspect the wire harness and connectors. Pay particular attention to all Power and Ground circuits.

    If there are no possible causes remaining, view repair. 

    Repair 

    1. Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the Service Information. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - PCM/ECM/SKREEM PROGRAMMING) .
    2. Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST) .
