Wheel Cylinder - Drum Brake: Removal

NOTE: Before proceeding, (Refer to BRAKES - WARNING) (Refer to BRAKES - CAUTION)  .

1. Using a brake pedal holder, depress the brake pedal past its first one inch of travel and hold it in this position. This will isolate the master cylinder from the brake hydraulic system and will not allow the brake fluid to drain out of the master cylinder reservoir.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. (Refer to LUBRICATION & MAINTENANCE/HOISTING - STANDARD PROCEDURE)

3. Remove the wheel mounting nuts (3), then the tire and wheel assembly.

4. Disconnect the brake tube (3) at the wheel cylinder (1).

   1 - DUST CAP

   2 - NUT

   3 - DRUM

   4 - HUB AND BEARING

   5 - WHEEL CYLINDER

   6 - SUPPORT PLATE

   7 - BRAKE SHOES

5. Remove any brake drum retaining clips, then the drum (3). (Refer to BRAKES/HYDRAULIC/MECHANICAL/DRUM - REMOVAL) 
6. Remove the dust cap (1) from the rear hub and bearing (4).
7. Remove the hub nut (2) securing the rear hub and bearing (4) to the spindle. Slide the hub and bearing off the spindle.

8. Compress the cable return spring, then remove the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.

   1 - HOLD-DOWN SPRING CLIPS

   2 - WHEEL CYLINDER

   3 - ANCHOR

   4 - LOWER RETURN SPRING

9. Remove the lower return spring (4).
10. Compress and remove both shoe hold-down spring clips (1).
11. Remove both shoes and remaining parts as an assembly from the anchor (3) and the wheel cylinder (2).

12. Remove the brake wheel cylinder mounting bolts (1).
13. Remove the brake wheel cylinder (2) from the brake support plate.
