Shoe And Linings-Rear Drum Brake: Installation

NOTE: Perform step  1. through step  13. on each side of vehicle to complete shoe set installation, then proceed to step  14.

  1. Lubricate shoe contact areas on support plate and anchor using Mopar® Brake Lubricant or equivalent.

    2 - UPPER RETURN SPRING
    3 - LEVER PAWL
    4 - LEADING SHOE
    5 - ADJUSTER SPRING
    6 - ADJUSTER
    7 - TRAILING SHOE
    NOTE: Right side drum brake shown. Right side is typical.
  2. Before installing shoes on vehicle, perform the following on the bench:
    • Place one leading shoe (4) and one trailing shoe (7) on the bench (trailing shoe has parking brake lever attached to it).
    • Install the adjuster (6) and the upper return spring (2).
    • Slide the lever pawl (3) under the adjuster (6) and onto the pivot on the leading shoe (4).
    • Install the adjuster spring (5) between the leading shoe (4) and the lever pawl (3).

  3. Install the pre-assembled brake shoe assembly over the wheel cylinder (2) and the anchor (3) on the brake support plate.

  4. Install both shoe hold-down pins (3) from the rear, through the support plate and shoes.

  5. Compress and install the shoe hold-down spring clips (1) on the pins.
  6. Install the lower return spring (4).

  7. Compress the parking brake cable return spring, then install the cable on the parking brake lever. Release the spring guiding it beneath the retaining tab on the lever.

  8. Slide the hub and bearing (4) onto the spindle.
  9. Install a NEW hub nut (2) on the spindle. Tighten the nut to 217 N.m (160 ft. lbs.).
  10. Install the hub and bearing dust cap (1).
  11. Adjust the brake shoes to the drum diameter using a brake shoe gauge. (Refer to BRAKES/HYDRAULIC/MECHANICAL/BRAKE PADS/SHOES - ADJUSTMENTS)

  12. Install the brake drum (3). (Refer to BRAKES/HYDRAULIC/MECHANICAL/DRUM - INSTALLATION)

  13. Install tire and wheel assembly (1) (Refer to TIRES/WHEELS - INSTALLATION) . Install and tighten wheel mounting nuts (3) to 135 N.m (100 ft. lbs.).
  14. Slowly rotate both rear wheels and verify that the brake drums lightly  drag on the shoes.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Road test vehicle stopping in both forward and reverse directions. Automatic-adjuster will continue to adjust brakes as necessary during road test.
