Rear Parking Brake Cable: Installation
NOTE:
For servicing either the left or right parking brake cable, follow the procedure as listed below.
- Install parking brake cable into floor pan of vehicle making sure sealing grommet is installed in floor pan as far as possible to insure a proper seal.
- Install parking brake cable into rear disc brake adapter or drum support plate. Once installed in place, be sure locking tabs on cable housing retainer are expanded.
- Attach 2 parking brake cable routing clips on rear frame rail. Install and securely tighten routing clip attaching screws.
- Install end of cable on parking brake actuating lever. Guide spring beneath retaining tab on lever.
- On vehicles with rear disc brakes, install and adjust parking brake shoes, install hub and bearing, rotor and caliper. See PARKING BRAKE SHOES .
- On vehicles with rear drum brakes:
- Insert cable into cable guide attached to anchor retaining plate.
- Slide hub and bearing onto spindle. Install retaining nut and tighten to 185 ft. lbs. (250 N.m) torque.
- Install hub and bearing dust cap.
- Install rear wheel and tire assembly on vehicle. Tighten all wheel lug nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Lower vehicle.
- Grasp parking brake cable to floor pan seal grommet by hand, and pull it into floor pan to ensure seal grommet is fully seated into floor pan.
- Route parking brake cable under carpeting and up to cable hole in console bracket on floor pan.
- Install parking brake cable into console bracket. See Fig 1. Once installed, be sure locking tabs on cable retainer have expanded out to hold cable in console bracket.
- Using a screwdriver, unlatch the parking brake output cable retainer. See Fig 2. Then remove cable retainer and parking brake cable tension equalizer from parking brake lever output cable and discard components.
- Install a NEW parking brake cable tension equalizer on parking brake lever output cable and rear parking brake cables. See Fig 3.
- Install a NEW parking brake lever output cable to tension equalizer retaining clip on tension equalizer. Cable retainer must be closed and securely latched.
- Adjust cable tension for parking brake system using following steps:
- Position parking brake lever so it is in the fully released position.
- Tighten adjusting nut on parking brake lever output cable until 1.02" (26 mm) of thread is out past top edge of adjustment nut. See Figure.
- Actuate parking brake lever to its fully applied position (15 clicks) one time and then reposition lever to its fully released position.
- Check rear wheels of vehicle with parking brake lever fully released; they should rotate freely without dragging.
- After parking brake cable tension has been properly adjusted, check for free play in parking brake lever. Parking brake hand lever should feel firm at all clicks, with a maximum of 15 clicks of lever travel possible.
- Install center floor console. See CENTER FLOOR CONSOLE .
- Install rear carpeting.
- Install both rear door sill plate moldings by snapping them onto rear door sills.
- Install lower rear seat cushion.
NOTE:
Parking brake cable routing and routing clips are different on right and left sides of vehicle. Be sure correct routing clips are installed on correct side of vehicle.
CAUTION:
Discard output cable retaining clip and tension equalizer after removing it from the park brake output cable. A new tension equalizer and retaining clip is to be used when installing a new rear parking brake cable.
CAUTION:
A new cable tension equalizer must be installed when replacing a rear parking brake cable. The new cable tension equalizer is required to correctly adjust parking brake cable tension after installing a new rear parking brake cable.
CAUTION:
A new retainer must be used when installing the parking brake mechanism output cable on the cable tension equalizer. Cable retainer usage is required to ensure output cable cannot separate from tension equalizer.
NOTE:
Actuating the parking brake lever to its fully applied position one time after tightening the adjustment nut will yield (stretch) the bent nail portion of the tension equalizer approximately 1/4". This process will correctly set the parking brake cable tension.
