Rear Drum Brake Shoes: Installation
NOTE:
Perform steps 1- 11
on each side of vehicle to complete shoe set installation, then proceed to step 12.
- Lubricate 6 shoe contact areas on support plate and anchor using Mopar® Brake Lubricant or equivalent.
- Before installing shoes on vehicle, perform the following on the bench:
- Place one leading and one trailing shoe on bench (trailing shoe has parking brake lever attached to it).
- Install adjuster and upper spring.
- Slide lever pawl under adjuster and onto pivot on leading shoe.
- Install adjuster spring between leading shoe and lever pawl.
- Install pre-assembled brake shoe assembly on brake support plate.
- Install lower return spring.
- Install both shoe hold-down pins from rear, through support plate and shoes. Compress and install shoe hold-down springs on pins.
- Compress parking brake cable return spring, then install cable on parking brake lever. Release spring guiding it beneath retaining tab on lever.
- Insert cable into cable guide attached to anchor retaining plate.
- Slide hub and bearing onto spindle. Install retaining nut and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install hub and bearing dust cap.
- Adjust brake shoes to drum diameter using brake shoe gauge. See ADJUSTMENTS .
- Install brake drum.
- Lower vehicle.
- Road test vehicle stopping in both forward and reverse directions. Automatic adjuster will continue to adjust brakes as necessary during road test.
