Parking Brake Cables: Removal
NOTE:
This procedure applies to either of the 2 rear parking brake cables.
- Unclip the air cleaner cover (2 clips) and move the clover aside.
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
- Block the wheels and tires so the vehicle does not move once the vehicle parking brake is released.
- Remove the transmission shift knob as necessary.
- Place the parking brake lever in released (full OFF) position.
- Remove the screws attaching center console.
- Remove rear window switch panel from console.
- Lock out parking brake cable adjuster. See CABLE TENSIONER
- Remove the rear parking brake cables from the parking brake cable equalizer. See Fig 1 .
- Remove the rear seat cushion from the vehicle.
- Fold the rear carpeting forward to expose the parking brake cables at the end of the rear floor.
- Install a 1/2" wrench over the parking brake retainer. See Fig 2 . Push the wrench onto the retainer until the retainer fingers are collapsed. From under the carpeting, grasp the parking brake cable housing and pull cable straight out of the bracket attached to the floor.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.
- On vehicle with rear drums, remove the brake drum.
- On vehicles equipped with rear discs, perform the following.
- Continue for all models, remove the dust cap from the rear hub and bearing.
- Remove the hub and bearing retaining nut from the rear hub and bearing.
- On vehicles equipped with rear discs, remove parking brake shoes. See PARKING BRAKE SHOES .
- On vehicle equipped with rear drums, remove the rear parking brake cable from the brake support plate.
- Remove the parking brake cable from the parking brake actuating lever. See Fig 3 .
- Remove the actuating spring between the brake shoe adjustment lever and the brake shoe. See Fig 4 .
- Remove the parking brake cable from the brake support plate. The parking brake cable can be removed from the brake support plate using a 1/2" box end wrench to compress the locking fingers on the parking brake cable retainer. See Fig 5 .
- On vehicles equipped with rear discs, remove the rear parking brake cable from the disc brake adapter.
- Remove the parking brake actuating lever from the parking brake cable. See Fig 6 .
- Remove the parking brake cable from the rear disc brake adapter. The parking brake cable can be removed from the disc brake adapter using a 1/2" offset box end wrench to compress the locking fingers on the parking brake cable retainer. See Fig 7 .
- Continue for all models, remove the 2 fasteners securing the cable and routing brackets to the axle trailing arm. See Fig 8 .
- Pull cable through hole in trailing arm.
- Remove the parking brake cable and sealing grommet from floor pan of the vehicle.
